Perfectly located and almost hidden in an affluent hillside residential area of Asturias' capital, the Ayre Hotel Alfonso II combines peace and quiet with accessibility. It's very easy to walk from the nearby bus or train station yet you don't have to stay in typical near-station accomodation. Once you've worked out that you need to take one of the outdoors escalators to Oviedo's upper level finding the hotel is very straightforward.
Service is excellent with the chamber maid actually coming back to tidy our room at 8pm while we were at dinner so we could sleep in all morning! Special mention must also be made of the delightful Fernando whose tourist advice monologues are both endearing and informative. He is particularly keen to share his recommendations for the best places to get tipsy on traditional Asturian cider.
Rooms are big and bright and when the sun shines through the curtains the patterns of the cast iron balconies play on the floor. The style is quasi-regency with lots of faux mahogany and burgundy tones. Beware of the shower though - there is the potential for a scorching or a soaking!
