“Fabulous location in vibrant area with associated downsides”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

Much of what the other reviewers say is true for our stay but we probably had it a bit better as we went in October. The hotel has two floors above the bar/sideria and the hotel is therefore enfused with the smell of cider and seafood. The owner and other staff were nice and friendly.

When the weather is warm and people are sitting outside in the square you get the noise of drinkers and revellers and passing buskers. We had this even in October but because the weather was cooler we could close the windows and we were armed with ear plugs (essential). I'd recommend you ask for second floor rooms to give you a layer between the bar and your bedroom. We also took earplugs which made a lot of difference. Our room was at the back and was quieter than our friends at the front who were overlooking the square. We could still hear the bagpipe playing buskers piping the theme to Star Wars though! The location is fantastic, right by the main square and a few metres from the beach. There is no air conditioning so in summer the rooms must get hot so it would be harder to shut out the noise, but if you go Spanish style and eat out late and drink late then the noise wouldn't be so much of an issue. I think it was still going on until 4 in the morning, so the challenge is to stay out that late.

Breakfast is 4 euros each, basic fare of coffee and bread and jam and cakes. Lots of lovely cafes nearby to go to for other breakfasts.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but we were only there for 3 nights and I have no idea what it would be like in the high season and heat. We didn't have our children with us but I wouldn't recommend it for children as they wouldn't sleep with earplugs. I would recommend it for a weekend break for adults though.

Cleanliness was fine in our bedroom and the hotel area.

We paid just under 50 euros a night for the room - I think if you paid much more you would expect more but for this it was good value. We were there for a wedding so lots of friends were dotted around town at other places - others had noise issues too and most people thought we had the best location. Parking is 9 euros a night.

“Diabolical!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

Good locationm for the old quarter of Gijon but when you step inside the nightmare begins. A reception desk above a filthy bar, stinking of cigarette smoke. The room and bathroom were filthy with both dirty sheets and towels, the curtains were hanging from the tracks. It was so hot we had to have the windows open but the noise from the bar downstairs kept us awake all night. Having stated that parking was available we arrived to discover that it was a lock up garage two streets away that denied us access to the car without assistance. We were also led to believe that parking was free but in fact they charge 9 Euros per night.
Having booked to stay longer we left after the one night without having breakfast as the dining room looked no cleaner. The 3 stars is totally misleading and is grossly overrated for this hotel.

“Old town, Original and Different”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2009

A large house ideally placed in the middle of the old town, packed with history and antiques. Comfortable en suite rooms. This hotel is definitely not a boutique hotel but has lots of original character and is all the better for it. The location is ideal for the old town of Gijon, the town and the beaches. The Sideria on the ground floor is packed with original features including exposed bedrock feature in the bar which I’m sure had a use in the past but my Spanish wasn’t good enough for the explanation. The tapas were also excellent. This is not a boring chain hotel, drawbacks for some might include no air conditioning, noise from Sideria, creaky floorboards and anything else associated with living in a big very old house. The staff were very friendly and the service efficient. Secure parking is available and note that traffic into the old town is restricted over night. In summary a real taste of Asturias.

“Meet ""Clinton"!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2003

A perfect place to stay. Low-key. Tucked away off a windy street, this hotel is wonderful. You are greeted by "Clinton", the little dog that stays around the hotel. Rooms are quite comfortable, and the continental breakfast is just enough to get you going to start your day. Close enough to walk to the center of Gijon. Stayed there twice, and will return on our next visit.
