We just stayed at the Best Western Cervantes on our vacation during the last week of December, 2011. It is rated as a four star hotel but deserves a 1-star rating at best. This hotel was the biggest hotel-related disappointment that my wife and I have ever encountered. I honestly can't say one good thing about it. From its cheap motel-like feel (most of the rooms involve walking outside and have front doors that open to the outdoors like a motel), to the moldy bathroom sinks, to the mattresses with springs that literally bulge out of the mattress and dig into your back -- these issues just begin to describe the nightmare we encountered at this hotel. We also had to deal with the smell of mildew, old shotty rooms with furniture that looks and feels straight out of a 1980's MOTEL. We had to ask them to switch our room three times before we found a room we could stomach sleeping in. In our last, "satisfactory" room, the lights to the room had socket to slide your room key into to keep the lights on (which is common in Spain). The lights in our room, even with the card in the light socket, constantly would turn off, which meant every few minutes we would have to go re-insert our card key into the socket to keep the lights on. So incredibly frustrating. Our last room faced the front street that the hotel sits on. There is some sort of youth center or community center next door and there were loud teens shooting off firecrackers for a good portion of the night. Needless to say, we had to keep our windows and storm shutters shut tight. The metal BARS on our window also made for some nice scenery. Our TV would constantly lose signal every 2 -3 minutes, not that it mattered because they did not have one english channel (about 6 channels total, all in Spanish). The front desk staff mocked me for asking for a room switch. Aside from the dirt, filth and mold experienced in the first two rooms, I could also clearly hear the voices of the people staying in the room above me. Lastly, I am being 100% serious when I say that in our last room, we had two twin beds. The springs were digging into my back so hard that I had to sleep with my wife in her twin bed for our three nights at the hotel. In our first room, there were actual stains and dirt on our sheets. In our third and last room, our sheets had holes in them. The walls and paint were severely chipped and scuffed. The parquet floorboards were coming loose and there were randmon parts of the floor that had substantial cracks in it. In our last room, there was a fuse box with a cover that was scotch taped on.
One out of the five front desk people we encountered was nice. The rest were cold and one even mocked me behind my back as I was walking away because I asked to have my room switched. And they did not make switching rooms easy. I had to ask several times and they tried to make me wait until the next morning. When I told them that my third room had the springs coming out of the mattress and jabbing into my back, they wouldn't switch me again. This led me to believe that ALL of the rooms are the same... pure junk! I would have rather stayed in a youth hostile. It would have been cleaner and more comfortable. At least in a hostile, you know what you're paying for. At the Hotel Cervantes, they operate under the guise of a four-star hotel. In fact, their 4-star rating is posted right on the oustide of their building. In reality, a Motel 6 makes the Cervantes look the the Four Seasons at least in terms of cleanliness and room/furniture and linen condition. It was horrible and really ruined our time in Seville. Had we not prepaid our room, we would have switched within the first five minutes of arriving. I can say with the UTMOST CERTAINTY, that you would have a better experience at any one-star hotel in Seville rather than staying at the Hotel Cervantes. What a complete nightmare!! My wife and I actually walked by several 1, 2 and 3 star hotels and looked into the lobby commenting on how much nicer everything looked than the Cervantes. Just to give you some background, my wife and I are not fancy people. We're in our 20's and we were not expecting the Ritz Carlton (we know what to expect from European hotels). But we were expecting something nicer than a sleezy, filthy motel; the kind you see driving by on the highway.
I don't think Best Western is to blame because each of their hotels are independently owned and we stayed at the Best Western Atlantico in Madrid and absolutely loved it. This is an issue with the Cervantes specifically.
Lastly, the physical location of the hotel is a fifteen minute walk from the center of Seville, which we knew when we booked it. Not a bad location, but many nicer hotels are much closer to the center of the city. Also, the roudy kids from the community center or church a few doors down from the Cervantes don't make the stay any more pleasant.
In short, unless you get a nightly rate of $40 U.S. dollars or below, I would HIGHLY suggest staying at ANY of Seville's nicer and cheaper 1, 2 and 3 star hotels. The Cervantes is in need of a remarkable amount of remodeling before I would ever suggest staying there. It was truly a disgusting hotel and it ruined our time in Seville. I truly feel that they should close down for a year and remodel it and make it habitable.
Room Tip: Like I said above, I would say that any 1, 2 or 3 star hotel in Seville would be better than staying...
