Went to Seville over New Year for some much-needed sun. I'm happy to say that the city obliged, and that this hotel was the perfect place to enjoy a short break.
We stayed in the Torreon Suite, at the very top of the building on the fourth floor. We didn't look at any of the other rooms, but the hotel describes this as their most spectacular, and I can believe it. There are two entrances: one of the elevators goes directly to the suite, and the other allows you to take stairs down to the third floor where you can then take the elevator the rest of the way. This was useful, as the direct elevator conked out for a bit during our stay. But it was quickly fixed.
The suite gave us a lovely view over Seville's rooftops. Even though it was the middle of winter, we were able to use the private roof terrace with its deck chairs and table. The curtains were great at blocking out the sunlight in the morning, but as soon as you opened them, light flooded the room. Even my partner, who hates staying indoors when we're on vacation, was content to spend a few hours just hanging out in the suite. At night, the room was completely quiet, and the hotel's location ensured that we were not bothered by outside noise.
The room has an Apple computer that was very handy for looking up information on restaurants, train times, and sights. With that and the large-screen TV, you had to be careful not to spend TOO much time indoors! We had room service a couple of times, which was very relaxing. There was a bottle of champagne in our room when we checked in, and that was also very much appreciated (and very quickly drunk.) All of the drinks in the mini-bar are complimentary and replenished daily.
The bathtub is in the bedroom itself, although the way the room is configured, you do get some measure of privacy. It's a 19th century marble bathtub that, to be honest, reminded me of a sarcophagus. We each tried it once, and that was enough. I appreciated the novelty, but I would have preferred a modern bathtub.
I don't think the rest of the hotel works so well during the colder months. The lobby is an open courtyard that gets way too cold to spend any time in. The hotel held a drinks reception there before the New Year's Eve dinner, and everyone froze. We all had to go into a smaller room off the lobby that was heated but didn't look too festive. There's a small library that's heated, but I didn't see anyone there. I'm sure the hotel's two courtyards are very pleasant during the warm months, though.
Breakfast is a rather exorbitant twenty euros per person. It's a nice spread and the dining room is elegant (considering it's in the basement, as is usual in continental hotels), but there are much cheaper options close by. Given that the room cost 600 euros per night, you'd think they'd include breakfast, but they don't. Even so, top marks to the kitchen -- the New Year's Eve dinner we had there was the best meal of our 5-day stay in Seville.
The hotel is in a labyrinth of streets that, if you navigate them correctly, takes you to the cathedral in about 10-15 minutes. If you get lost, it could be much longer. But that was part of the fun! After a few tries, we were able to get to our destinations with little trouble.
Seville is a low-key, charming, enchanting city, and this was a great hotel in which to enjoy it.
