We had a wonderful stay at Casa del Aljibe built in the 1400's I believe. Initially it does seem tucked away in the old town and you cannot park by it- one of the reasons we didnt bother to hire a car but it is actually ideally situated to explore and eat in characterful Albaicin- 5 mins walk uphill or walking less than 10 mins down hill brings you right to the main area by the Cathedral- either walk leading you through quaint but safe streets ( in our experience). As we prefer the individual character and history of places and are happy to explore on foot, it was ideal. Try to book the room with the view of the Alhambra - 80 euros per night because the view really is unbelievable!! The room has long wooden doors which have shuttered windows on them leading onto a tiny private balcony which is not accessed by anyone else. After a couple of nights, we put our pillows at the end of the bed , left the doors wide open and slept with a view of the stars and the Alhambra lit up at night only being woken by the birds!
The room has no air con but stayed pleasantly cool even in 30 degree heat. Designed around a courtyard with a pond, there is a ground floor looking out onto the patio, a first flooor with some view of the Alhambra and the second floor where the family live. Rooms are decorated in traditional arabic style with teracotta tiled floor, comfy bed with cotton sheets, table and chairs, little simple kitchen area with fridge and one ring cooker and a small bathroom. All clean and in good working order. Michael the owner is English and couldnt have been more helpful, from meeting us from the airport bus to finding us a hire car for our excursion to Cordoba.
The only downside is that as a taxi cannot drop you at the door, you will have to walk at least 5 mins if you come by taxi, or 10 if u use the airport bus and get dropped at the Cathedral- so make sure you have luggage that you can manage to walk with!!
The location and views from the place make it well worth a stay- we had a gorgeous time-so relaxing.
