“Character hotel, cool reception”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I had mixed feelings about this hotel. We arrived in the afternoon to a polite but unsmiling greeting from the woman and man at the front desk. They did not seem to want to catch our eye, nor make us feel welcome. I was surprised because usually I get on fine with hotel staff, after all it is not hard to do so because it is part of their training to be friendly and pleasant.

Anyway I didn't really mind but then the woman showed us to our room which was up 2 floors, and did not offer to help with luggage. I had to carry 2 bags, my partner had to carry one. up 4 flights of stairs. I did not feel like asking a young woman to help with my luggage. My partner saw I was burdened and loudly asked if I was OK carrying 2 bags. The receptionist took no notice.

Perhaps the receptionist is not able to carry luggage, and if that is the case, we felt the man should be told to escort guests upstairs and take their luggage, if the woman couldn't be expected to do it. I am not young and although I am quite capable of carrying my own luggage, and actually I am quite fit, still, other people of my age group could have had significant problems and I don't believe I have ever been to another hotel where I have been expected to take my luggage up 2 flights without anyone even asking if I wanted help.

Throughout our stay, as we went in and out of the hotel, these receptionists never gave us a smile and seemed to prefer not to look at us. When we finally left they did not ask if we had enjoyed our stay, and watched us go out of the door without offering to help. They did not say goodbye or wish us a good journey, even though there were no other guests there and nothing else for them to do.

Of course they did not refuse help when asked it, and I cannot complain that they didn't do what was asked. But not a single thing more.

I should add that this only applied to the day desk staff. The woman who was on the desk at night was very diferent, she was friendly and nice and did her best to help with any small problems. The cleaners and people at breakfast also smiled and acted in a normal friendly way, said hello in the morning etc. It doesn't cost anything to smile and say hello!

The room was small but rather nice, the bathroom had a very smalll shower, frankly it was cramped but then it is an old character place, and this was okay. The water was nice and hot. The hotel is in an old house and must be wonderful in the summer when it is hot. In winter, Granada gets very cold and so it was a bit chilly to walk out of our warm room into an open air courtyard area.

The breakfast is in a small room off the courtyard, and the breakfast was fine, with some unusual items like asparagus creme and carrot creme. I don't usually have a hot breakfast but I don't think there were cooked items on the buffet. There were some "healthy" foods, like soy milk and bee pollen, too. Another good thing about the hotel is that it offers free tea and coffee every afternoon from 4 pm.

The beds were comfortable and the place was clean. And of course, its big plus point was also a wonderful view of the Alhambra which is just above it on a towering hill. There are narrow alley ways around mostly unfortunately filled with tourist shops, but still it is quite fun, and most things are within a reasonably easy walk.

As other reviewers have commented, there is no car access and you are supposed to leave your car quite a long way away in a public car park for 18.50 euros. The hotel refunds the cost of the taxi fare from the car park, which is about 10-15 mins walk. However, my suggestion is to park outside town, e.g. near the bus station and get the 3 or 33 bus from the bus station because this goes fairly near the hotel, nearer than the car park. You are unlikely to have much use for a car in Granada, as a visitor, because many streets are narrow and parking isn't that easy.

When you want to go to the Alhambra, it looks near but it is a very steep climb because the hill is so high - and could easily take 20 mins or so. There is a little shuttle bus but you have to wait for it. It doesn't matter because it is a really pleasant little trip but just be warned, it may seem near but it's not THAT near!

To sum up.... we felt this could be a very nice hotel, and I can see that many people feel that it is. Perhaps we were just unlucky and the staff were unhappy about something during our visit. But I would have liked it far better if I had felt we were welcome. A smile and a friendly look is nice when you are not at home.

Room Tip: I think the top floor gets more sun and might have better views.

Room Tip: All rooms will be quiet.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind review.

As you wrote, we are at city's nerve centre. So much to do around here: flamencos, Alhambra, Cathedral, tapas bars, moruno teahouses...............
Definitely our hotel is very romantic and we normally have special offers for couples in our website.

I hope you can come back and visit soon.

“Wonderful hotel”

We spent 1 night at Hotel Casa del Capitel Nazari and it was lovely. We took a taxi and left the car in a car park that cost around 21€. There's no real parking around the hotel and the road passing by the entrance to the hotel is for cars & buses only.

A building next to the hotel is currently under construction. But once in the hotel you forget about the scaffoldings outside.

A really charming receptionist who was really very helpful and informative greets you. The hotel has an absolute charming courtyard with lovely Spanish features. The hotel offers free tea & coffee between 16:30-17:30 (I think). Which was well needed after the 1-hour drive from the coast.

As a surprise the top terrace bedroom was booked which has an outdoor terrace with a view of the Alhambra. The view at night is stunning. And my partner sat out and read his book first thing in the morning.

We didn't have the breakfast & instead went to a nearby bar.

If I ever get the chance to go back to Granada I would defo stay at Hotel Casa del Capitel Nazari again.

Room Tip: Don't drive as you wont be able to park. Park out of town and pay the overnight parking fee.

Dear Guest,

Thank your for your nice review. Really, I have a nice day when I read Casa Capitel is a place where you feel at ease. We try you feel at home. If you go back to Granada, make yourself at home.

As you explained, park your car at the city center can be a problem, for this reason we have an agreement with Plaza Puerta Real or Triunfo Parking (18.50 €/24 h). We reimburse taxi receipt from both parkings to the hotel if you bring it us. The nearest is San Agustin Parking but is more expensive than the others.
The hotel free tea & coffe is between 16.30 to 19.30 h.

Ángela.

“Pleasant and convenient”

We spent two nights in Granada at the Casa Capitel Nazari. From the airport bus drop off stop, the location was an easy 10-15 minute walk through the town's central pedestrian plaza and up a narrow pedestrian street. The building is old, well restored, and charming. The small room was clean and nicely appointed with wonderful windows that opened to an interior space. The room door opened to an interior courtyard (with Roman columns). The staff was very helpful and efficient; there is 24 hour desk attendance, and a very, very nice breakfast with a large variety of food. We enjoyed this hotel and would stay there again. There is no elevator--which we knew and didn't care. The same 10-15 minute walk that got us to the hotel took us back to the location of all the buses to the various sights.

“Good but dont bring a car”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

There's very heavy duty construction taking place right next door to this hotel at the moment.

We left yesterday (Monday - Oct 24th) and it was nice and quiet over the weekend but at 8.30am on Monday there were drills and kango hammers blasting concrete for hours.

I feel sorry for the hotel as they obviously cant do anything about it but ask for a room that isnt facing on to the same street as the front door. This isnt a small job either - it seems to be a shell of a building next door so if booking I would strongly recommend asking if there is construction next door for the next month or so.

Other than that we had a pleasant stay here, staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely no issues there. Breakfast was good and I like the way it goes on until 10.30am giving you a chance to get some sleep. The building itself is architecturally interesting.

My advice would be to NOT BRING A CAR to Granada if you are staying in this hotel or any hotel near the Alhanbra or old town. Its all tiny narrow mainly pedestrian streets. They have an 18.50euro per day deal with a car park about 15 mins walk away. We thought from their website that they actually had their own car park.

If you really have to bring a car do what we did (after one day) and park it out of town (I recommend an alley called Calle de la Yedra off Paseo Jardin de la Reina). We left our rental car there for two days and it was fine (assumming I dont get a fine in the post in a few months!) on the advice of a friend who lives over it in an apartment.

The staff are friendly and when I mentioned it was my girlfriend's birthday they gave us a bottle of cava in ice for free which was hugely appreciated.

If I was to offer some advice to the hotel I would say:
- put some low volume music on in the breakfast room in the mornings as its like a library and awkward.

- the cleaners need a pep talk. I had to ask for a plunger (and mop and bucket) on the first night when the shower filled up with water and left the bathroom in a pool of water. I actually didnt mind doing it (I couldnt let the well dressed girl at reception do it!) but this is a basic thing cleaners need to do. I pulled out lumps of hair from the drain which freed it up.

- we found a pair of womens tights under the bedside locker

- the light fittings over the bed were hanging out of the wall a bit (rawl plugs and a bit of filler would sort this out).

- also on our third day we had to ask for new toilet paper as the two small ones we got didnt last. Oddly when we asked for it at reception it got a big laugh - not sure why?! Perhaps she didnt know we didnt get any replacements for two days. Something got lost in translation there obviously!

- the hotel cleaners seem to wear hard sole shoes so when they are cleaning the room above you it sounds like somebody is doing flamenco dancing which would be nice if it wasn't 9am and you had been out until 3.30am visiting Bodegas! There are no ceilings in the rooms - just the floor boards of the room above you (which does look very impressive) but not when you

These are only very small things but would tie up some obvious loose ends at the hotel. Overall its a nice hotel and a great city to visit for a few nights.

Room Tip: Choose a room thats not in the same street as the main entrance.
