“Great hotel and good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We booked this hotel after reading some reviews that were good, but a few also mentioned smelly bathrooms. As we were travelling to Spain after six months in Asia, smelly bathrooms werent really a worry... thankfully, we stayed 7 nights and found this to be an economical and well run place, with very clean rooms (and our bathroom smelt fine- slights old pipes smell, but bugger all) with an awesome shower. Staff are helpful and the location great. Very happy with the place and we paid good price (winter rates worth asking for- we paid only 19 euro some nights, up to 39 on weekend). Free wifi, clean rooms, comfy bed, tv, balcony overlooking the city, short walk to cool streets for food/wine..all good. Its not atmospheric, but its a good budget choice and great value. Would definitely stay again.

“Nice hotel but the bathroom had a horrible smell”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

Like other reviewers said, there're many good things about the hotel: location near transportation to Albaicin and Alhambra, walking distance to many good tapa bars and other attractions; helpful and friendly staff, a small eating room, a grocery store just outside (where you can buy cured jambon, sweet caquis, water, etc). However, the bathroom had a foul smell, like sweage, that was horrible. After they clean it it doesn't smell much but as soon as you start using it (flushing or taking a shower) the smell comes up and it's horrible. I felt similar smell, but not as strong, in all the 3 towns we visited in Andaluzia and always in old neighborhoods so it may be something external to the hotel. However I stayed in other hotels that kept this smell much more under control. We had to open the door of our room and the windows (even it was ~40F outside) to have some air flow and cover the face when sleeping. Every time we had to go to the bathroom, we'll open the shower and flush the toilet with the hope it would wash that smell away. It was a big bummer in our stay.

Another anoying thing was that it didn't have a dryer. You have to borrow one from the front desk. The one I got was kept together with duck tape (!!!).

Room Tip: It seems that there're rooms with smell problems but not all. Ask the front desk for a room with...

“what a huge surprise”

Honestly I travelled from Portugal to France for a whole month and slept in many hotels and hostels. Now when I found this, what I assumed was a hostel, on a website I was happy with the price and booked it right away. To my amazement this is a small hotel with excellent service. The price for the month of July was ridiculously cheap and for that reason I worried about what we would find once there. Instead I arrived at a well decorated hotel with a staff ready to please. We were three in one room and it was greatly spaced. We each had a single bed in a clean and nicely decorated room with a great shower. I guess when it’s scorching hot all you want to do is take a great shower and this hotel had it. For the price of a hostel we had a great clean room and a new modern multiple jet shower. The staff was very helpful as is having free computer access in the lobby. The only issue might be the location. When I first arrived to the street the hotel is located on I realized that I and my luggage needed to make our way up a small hill where the hotel is situated. But once you make your way out of the hotel to sight see you can see that it is very near to the main boulevard where you will find shopping and many restaurants. You can walk through little streets and find so many interesting restaurants and shops which all lead to the main street. The people in Granada and this hotel were all very helpful and willing to help. The only thing I would say is not regarding the hotel but Granada itself. Make sure to know where you are going bus wise because bus drivers do not speak English nor care to help you out. And lastly, there are many gypsies in this area so beware of your belongings and people trying to read your palms for money. Aside from that enjoy the Arabic influences you will see in cafes and street markets. And although it might not be said often, do try ice cream in Granada…very tasty!

“Fantastic value, good location”

This was a great place to stay. It far exceeded our expectations for a budget hotel. The room was spacious and immaculately clean and had everything we could have wanted for a two night stay. A clean, comfortable bed and shower with plenty of hot water. Staff were courteous and informative. The location was great for visits to the Alhambra and the Cathedral - all within walking distance or easy for catching the numerous buses available. The hotel is in a quaint area with many wonderful tapas bars. There was some noise at night from guests entering their rooms, speaking at the tops of their voices - however, this is hardly the hotel's fault. Coffee, orange juice and croisants are available at a low price of 1-2 euros and there is a supermarket next door for the purchase of snacks. A full breakfast is available from the cafe across the street. Highly recommended for the price.

Room Tip: We asked for a room wtih good heating and easy access. This was provided for us.

“Shame about the smell!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Carlos V over New Year. The hotel is fairly well-located, about 10 minutes’ walk from the Plaza Nueva and very convenient for the buses to the Alhambra and Albaicin, and the staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. There is free wifi available, though not (as is suggested online) extending to all the guest rooms – you have to bring your computer to the public spaces.

Unfortunately, our stay was let down by a room with a strong smell of damp. The bathrooms in this hotel are made as wet-rooms, and ours didn’t clear properly. Although we noticed a smell on arrival, we went out almost immediately, and by the time we realized (on returning late at night) that this was a serious problem it seemed too late to make a fuss. In fairness to the hotel, I should say that we didn’t give them the chance to react to and address the issue. It’s clear also that many others here have had excellent experiences with this hotel, and had it not been for the smell, we’d certainly have given it 4 or 5 stars. All in all – probably a good option at a good price, but if you notice a smell when you open the door, say something!
