“Central, clean & very nice owner”

I can recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a cheap, quiet and clean location in Granada. It is situated very conveniently between the old city and the view point on top of the mountain. Ignore the pictures of the building on Google Streetview - they are old, the street looks much nicer today. The owner has a great sense of humour and is very helpful. His English is rather limited so if you really want to pick up a conversation, bring your dictionary along.

“Fantastic, friendly conveniently located bargain hostal in Granada city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2011

El Zaguan is a small hostal tucked away just off the main street of Granada (Gran Via) and not to be confused with the hotel of the same name (which our taxi driver did when we arrived). The exterior of the old building is simple but inside everything has been modernised but retaining the original charm. The rooms are extremely clean and the "dueno" Ignacio is very, very helpful and a fountain of information. Altho breakfast etc is not provided there are many places to eat nearby from the cheapest cafe to 5 star restaurants.Small city busses which run up to the Alhambra, Sacro Monte etc are frequent and stop nearby. You can easily stroll around the city and take in the relaxed friendly atmosphere while sightseeing..

“Awful sleep quality”

I've been reluctant to write a negative review about this Hostal just because the owner and his employee seemed nice, and the location was quite good. We stayed for 2 nights with my Mom. Of the six hotels/hostals we stayed at in our trip around Spain, this one is the only one we'll never ever want to return to. The room: the tiniest ever, even by Hostal standards- I mean not even a square meter spared for moving around, just enough space to open the door and get in bed. But the worst was the noise at night... a big assortment of it: old crackling water pipes, other guests going about their business in bathrooms and beds, the doorbell at midnight! or was it 5 am? the phone downstairs at the front desk and the ensuing conversation, the doorbell again at 2 am, morepipesmorephone ringing and nobody picking it up. Noise drove us crazy the first night, gave the place a second chance the second night with no luck, then it was time to leave thankgoodness. I understand the building is a historic landmark in Granada thus preserved with minimal changes, but I don't think it is suited at all for lodging, unless you're indifferent about room size and able to sleep even through an earthquake.
