“A great holiday experience - soon to be repeated!”

We had a 2 week stay in Hotel ROC Lago Rojo, Carihuela, Costa del Sol from 26 Oct to 9 Nov 2011. We were pleasantly surprised as we had read some bad reviews on Tripadvisor and were rather wary. Our experience was very different - we were extremely satisfied with the Hotel. It was well located and easily accessible. The staff and management were attentive, friendly and helpful. We were on full board stay and the food, which was a buffet, was wide and varied, fresh, very delicious and the service was exquisite although the Hotel was busy. The dishes were replenished promptly and there was no attempt to skimp, even towards the end of the mealtimes. Our room which, we understand, was similar to the others, was a split-level room, with a spacious bedroom area and roomy bathroom on the upper level, and a large "sitting room" down a few steps. The room was cleaned daily and the beds made; bed linen was changed every few days. We had never stayed on a full-board basis before, nor had we had such a long stay in any one hotel so had been just a little dubious that we might have been bored with the food. However, we need not have worried as it was a great experience, and hassle free, so we are planning to go back again - this time for three weeks!!! The Hotel had been recommended to us both by friends who had stayed there earlier in 2011 and by Killiney Travel; their assessments proved to be reliable and did not accord with some of the negative experiences of other "Trippers". This is basically a good hotel with good management who are succeeding in providing a good product that pleases a large proportion of their guests - but no hotel can ever satisfy 100% of their guests 100% of the time - and that may not be the fault of the hotel.

“Jan 2012 visit.”

Stayed here with family and friends in the junior suites. Rooms are airy, clean and top class condition. Towels changed daily, linen once a week. Rooms to the right of the hotel entrance did not get the sun in winter nor get a sea view. Apparently rooms with a sea view are not junior suites, but i prefered to have the latter as the sea is only about 80yds to the beach via the rear entrance. No issues at all with staff or food. Everything A1 for my needs. I agree with Ballygarriff not the Ritz but not far off in my opinion for high standards for ordinary folk wanting good value with a bit of class.

Room Tip: Junior suites give plenty of space and all round comfort. I was in 308 and the sun doesn't get t...

“November 2011”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

My husband and I stayed here 23-30 November 2011.We are not people who look for Ritz like accommodation for a budget price. So if this is you read on. This hotel is not the Ritz if that is what you seek but if you are happy with clean spacious rooms with a balcony, more than helpful staff, more wine than you can drink at meals coupled with more delicious food than you can eat at each of your 3 meals then this is the place for you. The rooms are called mini suites as along with the beds there is a sitting room with a couch and flat screen tv off which there is a small balcony with table and chair and clothes airer. The bathroom has toilet washbasin, bath with shower, bidet and also hairdrier. Room is cleaned, beds are made and used towels replaced daily. Rooms do not have tea and coffee making facilities but so much food is on offer that in a way this would be surplus to requirement. If you need a cuppa you can bring along a travel kettle and two cups as we did. We booked our holiday with Rathgar Travel {Senior travel} for €445 per person for 7 nights ,We had our flights including taxes and baggage from Dublin to Malaga. We were picked up at Malaga airport on arrival and brought to Hotel and again brought back to Malaga airport on departure. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner included each day. We also had the services of Rathgar travel Rep during our stay. The meals were served buffet style. Each meal had lashings of hot and cold food and beverages of which you could eat and drink as much or as little as satisfied your needs. The array of food at lunch and dinner was enormous including starters, main course and desserts. With both of these two meals a large bottle of wine per couple was included. We didn't take the wine for lunch as we wanted to be able to be awake and alert for the afternoon. One day I asked the waitress for a glass of wine instead of the bottle but she said that this could not be done. This seemed ridiculous to my mind. There was entertainment in the bar on many nights of our stay. The drinks in the hotel bar was expensive so we went to a little bar across the road after dinner each evening. Included also were two short day trips one to Mijas and the other to Malaga. We did not avail of these as a hotel client to whom we spoke advised us not to go for the following reason. The bus stopped at so many hotels en route that a journey which would take 20 to 30 minutes at very low cost on local bus took 2 hours there and two more hours on the return journey. We booked by Spanish public transport Alsa to visit Granada. Tickets from Malaga to Granada cost about €20 per person each way. Entry tickets to the Alhambra cost about €13 per person. It is advisable to buy them on line before you go to Granada and you can collect them at La Caixa bank in Torremolinos which has a desk where english is spoken. When booking these tickets you must also select a time when you will visit the Nasrid Palace .We took the 9am bus to Granada and the 7pm back. A taxi from the hotel to Malaga cost about €30 each way. The Alhambra is beyond words. Bring very comfortable shoes as there is much walking to be done and many steps to climb if you wish to see everything. Bring reasonably warm clothing as Granada being at an altitude was quite cool. This day trip will give you a very short time to see the city of Granada but if you want to take in both the city and the Alhambra a second day at least would be needed. We visited the Albaycin part of the city with its maze of alleyways but this was all done very hastily. We saw parts of the city on the bus we took from The Alhambra to the city bus station and it was indeed breathtaking. The bus/coach was very comfortable and on the return journey all passengers were given a bottle of water and a light snack free gratis. When you book your tickets you are allocated your seat. The journey takes about 2 hours. On arrival at the bus station in Granada we got a taxi from there to Albaycin. From there we took one of the small public transport buses which snake their way through the alleyways around the sharpest bends you have ever seen to the Alhambra. I am including this piece of information regarding visiting the Alhambra for those who may be interested because if you like history and architecture it is a must. Back to Hotel Lago Rojo. As for the hotel guests they were all in the 50+ age bracket. I cannot vouch for what noise levels would be like in mid summer but I can guarantee it was nil when we were there. You can access the beautiful beach by using your hotel room swipe card on the gate at the rear of the hotel. At the end of the day its each to his own on what he/she feels are good hotel standards and value for money. But we certainly could not fault the hotel. My husband and I have travelled all over the world but we would prefer to spend our money on visiting places rather than top of the range hotels. This hotel more than met our needs for courtesy, cleanliness and above all food. If I were forced to find a fault it would be that there was too much delicious food and wine for each meal and that surely cannot be counted as a fault as we all have free will to pull back from the table

“Excellent value at Hotel Roc Lago Rojo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

We stayed here in November 2011. It was excellent value for the high standard offered. Staff at reception are very helpful. Some of the staff do not have good english but an effort is made to try to understand. There is a very relaxed atmosphere in this hotel and while it may take a little time, every query is dealt with very satisfactorily. I single out Petra for her helpfulness, pleasantness, efficiency and kindness. The hotel itself is minimalist and there are no frills. Any extras, like fridges, safes or an upgrade cost but are not that expensive and certainly add to the overall stay in the hotel. Bedrooms could do with some shelving and drawers but what is there is adequate. Rooms are very well cleaned everyday. We paid for an upgrade to a sea-view on the 5th floor and I would recommend this. The dining room is again minimilist in decor but the food served is of a very high standard and certainly one of the best four star quality. Food is fresh and a great choice is offered. The fresh fruit and salads are of a very high standard. Dining room and kitchen staff are friendly. The chefs are very pleasant and certainly seem to enjoy their work. Entertainment while very good tended to be repetitive over the weeks. The hotel is in an excellent location. The back gate leads to the main area of Carihuela and is mid-way between Torremolinos Central and Benalmadena. There are many restaurants, bars and cafes in Carihuela. Many of these have great character and are very old. There is a beautiful extended walk that brings one to either of these. [A lift brings one up to the main shopping area of Torremolinas itself if one doesn't want to climb the hill] One may also walk one block up to the main road to these areas, shorter although not quite as picturesque. The beach is just one street away. It is worth availing of the sunbeds on the beach for comfort. The pool at the hotel is small and adequate but does not receive the sun all day. This was November however so the sun may be there for longer periods in the high summer. Definitely recommend this hotel - for those who travel in winter, it is in an excellent location.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views

i have stayed in this area many times-often in hotels with lower star ratings, but have never experienced such low qualty standard or choice at meal times, for this reason alone i will not return to this hotel, It would be fine on a room only basis.
