Visited Marbella for the first time 17th sept- 23rd sept. We got to the hotel 23.30 (we had a ryan air flight, therefore had to get a bus (4.60 euros-taxi costs 80 euros) from airport to marbella bus station then a taxi to the hotel which cost 12 euros). Checking in was straight forward, was given details about the room, breakfast and where the swimming pool was etc. We were re-assured at this point that we had the room which we requested (double bed, highest possible floor-no smoking).
The room:
When we got to the room (which was on the top floor) we instantly discovered it was a smoking room (but didn't really mind becuse you couldn't smell any previous residue smoking). Then we checked the beds-they we're twin beds! Rang reception and they told us they were fully booked-if we wanted another room we had to ring first thing the next day. (we checked for two mornings @ 8 am and were given a sarcastic remark by Antonio at reception - which was ''you weren't early enough-there are no rooms available''). So we gave up and accepted we had to have twin beds-also we didn't want to spoil our holiday!
Went to have a shower-the shower was a little difficult to get the hang of but wasn't too bad once you got used to it (husband got the hang of it towards the end of our stay :) ) The room itself had a safe, minibar and balcony, with a beautiful view of the golden mile (could see a bit of the ocean too). It also had a neat 'dressing area' which consisted of two basins (which is handy when your in a hurry in the morning!), hair dryer and the shower/bath combo and toilet is in a seperate area. However the 'robes' that they say they provide-were invisible.
Cleansiness; House keeping were fab. Room was very clean.
Breakfast: Plentiful buffet style breakfast, consisting of full English Breakfast, (Eggs were always cold) pastries,(tasted as though they had been there a little while though) juice, fruit and yogurt. Breakfast was served until 11 am and not a single second longer!
Taxis: Some advice, don't get the hotel to book your taxi because they get commision on it, when we booked a taxi to Puerto Banus on the first night - it cost us 12 euros. When we walked across the road from NH alanda the next night to Hotel Puente Romana - the taxi into Puerto Banus cost 9.5 Euros.
Beach: 5 min walk - cross the road infront of the hotel-walk through Hotel Puente Romana. NH Alanda have their own beach club, 10 Euros PP includes sun bed, sun towel and a bottle of cold water. Or alternatively there's sun beds for 6 Euros just a little further away from the hotels beach club. (But you don't get the frills-just the sun bed).
Me and my husband enjoy walking so on our first day in Marbella we walked along the promenade to Puerto Banus (took us 50 mins on a v hot day!) The next day we walked to old town, took us exactly the same amount of time. However that evening, walking back from old town, it was cool-got to the hotel in 35 mins.
Puerto Banus: Pricey, be prepared to spend alot of money-Average meal 60-80 Euros. Average drink, about 8 Euros. (Bumped into Trevor Francis) it's true, you will never leave Puerto Banus w/o spotting a celebrity. There's plenty of gorgeous yachts, cars and designer shops too.
If it's a budget holiday that your after stick to Old Town - they have lots of happy hours. However theres alot of riff raff there watch out. Old towns orange tree square is beautiful-plenty of boutique shops and cafes. Theres also a tourist information office in old town which was really helpful since the hotel staff weren't really helpful!
Bus-bus stop right outside the hotel and very cheap 1.5 Euros one way to puerto banus or old town.
Hotel customer service- VERY SARCASTIC. On the second day we asked Antonio where a restaurant called 'Sukothai' was, his answer ''i don't know'' then we asked ''can you atleast help us find it?'' Antonios answer ''It's probably past Old Town somewhere''. So we asked whether he knew how much it would cost roughly in taxi, Antonios answer ''Do I look like a taxi man?'' So we gave up on asking him anything. The next day, helpful chap @ reception 'Paco' rang the restaurant and made a booking for us-he was also unsure about the whereabouts. So we booked a cab and the cabbie said he knew where it was. Sukhothai was two mins in car away from the hotel on the mile!
We've had better customer service at 3 star hotels. Nobody wanted to help and even giving a map was a chore for them. Which is a shame really, that's the only thing that has put us off from coming back here.
But all in all loved marbella - will be back!
Room Tip: On a Saturday night you will definately hear some noise from the little restaurant infront of the ho...
