In many ways the H10 Andalucía Plaza flatters to deceive. Its impressive lobby, which would not be out of place in a Hyatt or a Ritz Carlton, does not reflect the level of sophistication in the rest of the hotel.
Located on a very busy commuter road (imagine a hotel overlooking the North Circular Road in London and you will get the idea) there is a constant drone of traffic when lounging around the pool area. You do get used to this, but an idyllic get-away it isn’t. The hotel itself is made up of 2 accommodation blocks facing each other, with the pool area in between. The rooms themselves are adequate and we were able to get a pool view room, from which you could manage a view of the sea from if you stretch from the balcony and have good eyesight. The beach is a 10-15 minute walk away through an underpass. A note however, the underpass is not part of the hotel and subsequently has seen better days. My wife certainly would not venture through there on her own – at any time of the day!
There are bus stops immediately outside the hotel, which we used to great effect and we also did the Gibraltar day trip, which is an absolute must if you have never been before. If you do go, make sure that you do the tunnel tour – incredible!
The pool itself is quite small by the standards you would expect from a hotel of this classification and sun beds were generally at a premium. However, the big issue we had with the pool was the totally scarcity of parasols. They have a small number of about 12 fixed thatched umbrellas (which are generally gone almost before dawn) and 6, yes 6 mobile parasols. This is for a hotel with a capacity of around 800 people when full! If you’re in the sun without one, you had better bring the factor 100.
The restaurant is not large but has a good spread of food on the buffet. They also have an open kitchen bar where you can pick from one of the days specials, usually 2 meats and a fish The chefs then cook it while you wait. We certainly ate well and have no complaints on that score.
As far as the area is concerned, it is 10-20 minutes walk into town at night, which is great to do after dinner. Inevitably, there is a lot of people watching going on down by the harbour and it is worth going just to see how the other half live with their massive boats and yachts. Supercars are everywhere and it makes you want to rush home and buy a lottery ticket. I want that life!
Overall, we did enjoy our break at the H10 Andalucía Plaza. It is not the best place we have ever stayed, but we learned after a couple of days how to get the very best out of our stay there and made the best of it.
