“Authentic Marbella”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

Forget the gaudy, tasteless playground for the rich label, for a flavour of authentic Marbella you can't beat the atmosphere or the great food, reasonably priced, of the (casco antiguo) old town. Here you can admire the arab walls, investigate the remains of the 10th century fortress and wonder at the harmonious mix of Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic and Moorish architecture. On one of its narrowest streets is Bar El Estrecho, a real traditional tavern serving home made tapas. For a town teeming with resident foreigners and tourists the clientele here is mainly Spanish. We loved their Piquillo peppers stuffed with spinach and tuna. Another good tapas bar is Taberna la Nina de el Pisto, decorated with bullfight posters, it is what the Spanish call ACOGEDOR, warm and friendly. The same word applies to the Sultan hotel which is ideally located in a quiet area close to all amenities.

“Gorgeous place”

I stayed here in April with two other friends and I had a great time!
3 days and 2 nights we stayed.
I enjoyed the wonderful, beautiful pool in a beautiful garden, with beautiful palm trees,
it looked just like a tropical garden!
The rooms are large, with a large terrace.
We had a delicious sandwich toaster so we could eat in the afternoon, there was a washing machine, dishwasher, and microwave!
I would love to come back but for a longer period of time!
Everything is within walking distance! And you can have beautiful views of mountains, and a beautiful sea view depending what room you have.
The furnishings were nice, but pretty old! It was furnished Spanish style.
We paid about 75 euros per night but split that between the three of us and it was like paradise for a cheap price. Of course breakfast wasn't included but that gave us a chance to go out and explore to find something to eat.
I suggest Mamma Gina that's right around the corner. Food was great!
Marbella is gorgeous and this hotel is splendid!
Will be back in the future!

“Good hotel, good location, good place to spend a week, whatever the weather”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Spent a week at the Sultan Club with family (wife and 2 teenage girls) in late October 2011. That was the week the Costa Del Sol had some impressive storms which left the beaches a bit battered but we still had a good time. Marbella in late October has a relaxed more Spanish feel and is all the better for it. Prices were reasonable for food and drinks and the Sultan Club is in a good location to enjoy the town. OK so the flowery decor at the Sultan might not be to everyones taste but the staff keep it clean, the maids are lovely and most of the front desk guys are pleasant and helpful. I would not try to park on the street outside in peak season but in October there are usually parking spots to be found near the hotel after the office workers have gone home around 8:00pm. The rooms are a good size, kitchens quite well equipped and big flat screen TVs to watch the Spanish, French and German channels. Separate bedroom and living room and a big balcony. The girls loved the pool and gym and if Bernd from Germany is reading this review, Tash and Hollie say Hi!
From Marbella we drove out to Ronda and Mijas which are both worth the drives, the sea was still warm enough to swim in (20 degrees C) and the promenade out to via verde is a lovely walk anytime but specially at sunset.
It is only an hours drive from Malaga airport, car hire can be cheap and easy and we found it a lovely place to relax with a good European feel to it. We may well go back next Autumn!

Room Tip: High rooms overlooking the pool are good and the kids will like the glass external elevators

“Sultan in the sun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

This was our second time staying at the Sultan Club and we will definitely return again. Location is perfect with hotel set in a lovely avenue with palm trees and cherry blossom like trees; few minutes walk to the beach and about 20 minutes walk to the Old Town but if you take the scenic beach route to the Old Town the walk does not seem as long!. Safe both day and night for strolling. Hotel itself is perfect, if you want a nice relaxing break, this is the place. We have stayed in numerous apartments in Spain and Portugal and these apartments are easily the biggest with ample room for 3 or 4 people. We had a front facing apartment with a hugh balcony, view to the mountains to the left and seaview to the right, beautiful. The weather for mid-October was brillant. Apartments were cleaned everyday and sheets and towels changed, cleaning staff most friendly. Check in was very fast and efficient and reception staff most helpful. Can't remember the young man's name on reception but he was most helpful, organised day trips and taxis for us and to him I say a belated thank you. We were on a self catering basis so I can't comment on the restaurant and bar. Outdoor pool set in a lovely garden area. There are numerous restaurant and bars to choose from for an evening out. The only negative point I would make is that internet is available on the bar area computers and when bar closes no internet available (unless you have your own laptop with you); also there was no printer available and this is a must for printing boarding cards etc.
Had a wonderful time and can't wait to return again to the leafy lined avenue in the sun!

Room Tip: Room to the front of hotel has lovely views of mountains and sea. It is also nice and cool after a...

“Needs updating - chuck out the chintz !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

Nice looking foyer, very quick check-in and the reception staff were very pleasant and helpful letting us into our rooms early and putting our 3 rooms next to one another as requested. The room had a fusty smell though and the decor was very dated, awful chintz curtains and bed trims. The sheets were much too small for the bed and in the morning they were all crinkled up and exposing the mattress. The kitchen had basic facilities. We couldnt find a kettle and there was no microwave. There was a shortage of teaspoons and knives in the cutlery drawer. Lots of wine glasses but no tumblers and just an odd assortment of plates and bowls. The sofa's had very dated covers on. TV was flat screen and very large though. The Lounge/Bedroom and Bathroom were all spacious and kept clean. The maids left clean towels every day , mopped the floors and made the beds. The balcony was very large but only had 2 sunbeds and 2 chairs on it. I'm not sure if there would be more if you had booked the room to accomodate more than 2 people. The pool was attractive and so were the gardens it was set in. Towels for the sunbeds are provided by the hotel. However, the pool area was very quiet with no background music or atmosphere but then, that may be what some people are looking for. Service at the bar was very slow and there was no poolside service, you had to walk back into the hotel and through the foyer into the bar for drinks/food. We found the staff at reception very helpful ,advising us on prices we could expect to pay for any taxi trips, ordering taxi's for us which arrived very quickly. Providing directions to places etc etc. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Taxi from airport to hotel EUR75, from hotel to airport EUR63 (not sure why cheaper when distance the same !!) Into Marbella town around EUR11. Just a short walk from the hotel is the beach and we ate regularly at Cappucino's , just turn right when you reach the beach. They serve top quality food and drinks - you pay a bit more but its really worth it. The food is gorgeous, and so are the waiters - service is excellent . They play chill-out music all day which is also piped to their sunbeds on the beach which were EUR15 per day but you got a lovely beach towel and a free drink of iced tea, water or cola . There were also some fabulous thai ladies offering massages on the beach , and i can highly recommend the foot and leg massage (EUR15).
