I'm keen to give as even-handed a review as possible as Hotel Alameda fitted our needs exactly in two stays bookending a tour of Andalucia - simply good value, no-frills accommodation in a great location. That said, it's only fair to potential guests to give a clear indication of what to expect.
Housed in a handful of rooms on the 8th floor of an office block, we found the convenient, central location in side streets just of Alameda Principal, the main thoroughfare, to be surprisingly quiet despite the bustle of central Malaga (especially at night when the vibrant streets are really alive with people). Yet it's still in easy walking distance of all main sights and beaches, the port, a wealth of bars and restaurants and excellent public transport - including bus and train connections to the airport.
Rooms are small and bathrooms smaller with rudimentary but spotlessly clean washing facilities - shower performance is an undeniable weak point. Apart from free wi-fi, other facilities are minimal. I'd trade the massive TV for even just a kettle (never mind a mini-bar) any day as there's no food on-site, although the hotel is related to a cafe along the street and there are plenty further options for reasonably priced meals in striking distance.
Contrary to some opinion expressed here, we found the rooms were cleaned daily and staff varied from businesslike to genuinely friendly - we got a personal send off at the end of our first stay so overall my vote must be positive even though I'd like to be clear this is strictly no-frills accommodation.
Clearly, if you like to be pampered, this is not the place, but if you need a good value base to get out and about around town and just get your head down at night, this is for you.
Incidentally, while the hotel is accessible via a small lift with ramp at ground level, I would tend to suggest the generally confined spaces within the hotel, especially in bathrooms, are likely to be unacceptably restrictive to wheelchair users.
Room Tip: Room 12 was by reception and slightly noisy - room 10 is quieter, small balcony is a nice afternoon...
