“Great Hotel but a bit off the beaten track”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2008

Holiday to PLAYABELLA SPA HOTEL Estepona. Well Playa del Sol-Villacana actually. October 2008

The trip from Malaga Airport was a little daunting as we had to hire a car for the week, airport shuttles weren’t available and Taxi’s wanted best part of €200 for the round trip.
A hire car from CarJet.com was only €76 for six days, plus petrol of course, that price included all insurances and collision waiver.
Finding the hotel was something else as the roads don’t seem to have names on them !
A tip for those who drive there for the first time.
Head West on the A7 (it’s about 65Km from the airport) Look for the turning to CANCELADA (cambio de sentido. (Which I think means change direction !)) and turn off there, you are now on the wrong side of the A7 dual carriageway, take the road across the motorway and then you are on a slip road running parallel to the A7, Next point to look for is Urbanization Costalita, once you find that your 200 metres away from the Playabella Hotel.
The hotel has plenty of parking spaces and as the road is a dead end leading to the sea, parking is available all along there too.

The food and amenities are out of this world, rooms are spotless and large. Bathrooms have a Circular Bathtub, Shower Cubicle, Wash Basin and leading off the main bathroom is the Toilet & Bidet. Towels are changed daily if required. For a change the AirCon is whisper quiet as is the extractor in the bathroom. The satellite TV in our room had plenty of channels but the only two in English were CNN & BBC World News also the picture quality wasn’t very good, a lot of ghosting on the screen. The corridors are all ceramic tiled and automatically lit as you walk along, very pretty and spotlessly clean but the clip-clop of high heeled shoes tends to echo all around in the still of the evening.
All-inclusive is a must in my opinion, not that we went for every meal.
The drinks seemed a little expensive for the people who weren’t AI.
Unusually 90% of the drinks were available Free Of charge to AI guests, Sprits, Liqueurs and Beers, even one brand of Champagne was on the list of zero charge.

The animation team worked really hard but were obviously on a very tight budget and having to work with a mixed nationalities audience, English, French, Spanish and German, some of the presentations were a little childish.

The hotel has a large irregular shaped outdoor pool in the centre of the complex but the water was far too cold to really enjoy the benefit of it, it looked pretty though. All but the foolhardy and kids with antifreeze in there veins were the only users, shame really as there were two separate whirl pools and a couple of tube slides built into the rock facade.
Beach towels are available for most of the day and are exchanged on a one for one basis by the outdoor pool as many times in the day as you want.

For the wimps like me there was a large indoor heated pool and a powerful Hot Jacuzzi. That got plenty of use.

Sun beds were plentiful although would imagine in the height of summer when the hotel is full to capacity there could be a shortage. The restaurant could be a problem with a full complement of guests also.

That’s all the good things.

The only downside is the geographical location, although it’s on the beach there is absolutely nothing local to it, you really do need a car or Taxi’s everywhere. Estepona is about 12Km to the west and San Pedro 15Km to the east.

Beware the beach it’s sandy down to a stony waters edge, also the beach shelves very early so wading out into the water you will suddenly find yourself in deep water, not suitable for non-swimmers or children in my opinion.

Would I recommend this hotel ? I certainly would for a relaxing break for families and the more senior guests, not for youngsters though.

  • Liked — Great service all round. Spotlessly clean.
  • Disliked — Geographical location. Pretty but not tourist friendly, no shops or amenities for miles !

“Lovely hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2008

My husband and I spent 4 days at this hotel and enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel staff were very friendly, rooms were clean, the food excellent and the sun shone! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. The only downside is that it is slightly out of town so you have to get a taxi to Estepona and Marbella but apart from that it was a great break.

  • Liked — Clean and spacious
  • Disliked — Decor a bit old fashioned

“Great Hotel Shame About The Room Smell”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2008

We recently stayed at the Gran Hotel Playabella in Estepona. On the whole this hotel is very good and we enjoyed our stay. However, from day one we had the most horrendous smell in our rooms (140 and 142 on the ground floor) which was the smell of rotting veg/drains. We all smelt it throughout the first night and then complained. The smell got a little better. We complained again, the smell got a bit better, complained again and the smell got to a point where it was bearable. The room was a good size but quite dark and we had to keep the lights on in the day time in order to see properly. The sun didnt quite get to our patio. We had two cleaners, one of which was very good, she always washed out the lovely round bath, the other didnt. The first night there were mozzies in the room and I got bitten and found the dead ones in the big bath in the room the following day but after that, I used the rid mozzie smelly stuff which got rid of them before they could do any more damage. The walk in clothes closet was great and even had an iron and board and plenty of hangers. The bed was fairly comfortable too and was fairly big. I liked the inside of the hotel too as nicely set out. The eating area however does not seem to have air con and we often roasted. You could sit outside but because of the covers, it was often just as hot. The food was great choice, prawns, smoked salmon, different fish... just an endless list. We found some of the restaurant staff a bit rude but most were fine. The bar staff were mostly good after an initial "getting to know you and what you really like to drink". We were all inclusive and at first they would give us their local branded alcohol but then we found out (via a drinks menu I eventually found) that the all inclusive included branded alcohol so I used to specifically ask in order to get the right one. The coffee is extremely good but make sure you ask for con leche as otherwise you get it black. The pool area is really nice and had a nice jacuzzi but we found that there were not enough sun umbrellas around. We went into the spa while we were there - its ok - nice small pool and not crowded but think that the ice cave was rather disappointing - a bit of ice in the middle. The animation team work extremely hard at entertaining but a little monotonous after the initial shows. On the whole I think the staff work extremely hard at this hotel and I would certainly recommend it to anyone but make sure you dont get rooms 140 and 142 on the ground floor!

“good value hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2008

the playabella is a good 4 star hotel situated directly on the beach
I went with my family including a 2 and 4 year old
getting there
the hotel is approx 4 kl outside marbella towards estapona on the A7 take the rightturn off for the selenza hotel up to roundabout left across motorway left at next roundabout then left at the next roundabout and follow road for 200mt hotel on left hand side
from malaga either car hire about £100.00 per week (watch for 3rd party insurance)or transfers or bus to marbella then bus to hotel
bear in mind this hotel does have a lot of regular french and spainish guests and so in the restaurant some of the staff's english is basic so be patient however all hotel staff are very friendly and helpfull and nothing is too mutch trouble the food is excellent and is overwelming with choice
the rooms are big and all have large beds , and big round tub and a separate power shower
the pool is excellent for young children it has a big shallow area
and chutes, the indoor pool is only suitable for swimmers
the beach is soft grey/beige but the shoreline drops away quite quickly and is probable suited to swimmers
we had all inclusive your room card was your pass and there was a good selection of cocktails and wines available tapas and ice cream being the main snacks
all in all an excellent week made by the all friendly staff and facillities

  • Liked — the friendliness of the staff
