“Dissapointing”

We've just come back from a short trip to Las Dunas. We arrived late on Sunday night as our flight was delayed a couple of hours. We had a table booked in the restaurant so they knew we were on our way. When we checked in we were told that the Chef had gone home and we could not order any food - at all, not even a sandwich on room service ! We had to take a taxi 15 mins away to get something to eat. This is a typical example of the deterioration in service since the hotel was taken over by Sofitel. It certainly doesn't deserve the 5 star GL rating it rides on from the old days and I wouldn't catagorise it as one of the 'Leading Hotels of the World' anymore. We've been going to Las Dunas for years so this is a real dissapointment as it used to be a great place and one of our favourites.

“truth about Las Dunas Estepona”

The grounds were nice, but they did not give any five star service. More like a three star hotel as observed by others. I had a huge leak coming from the bathroom above but it took two days to fix and even then it started again. A swamp in my bathroom at $600 a night. I was refused bar service on the beach, being told that they were closed, even though the service flag was up and a group of travellers who were drinking some expensive champagne were attended to. Two different people explained the same very basic things about our room when we checked in and both expected tips. The pool had dirty tiles and both the restaurant and simple drinks are overpriced. Not recommended.

ARRIVED JUNE 2004 , staff very helpful, food & drinks very expensive, beach is not up to blue flag standards, this Hotel in my opinion does not quite deserve a 5star rating when you compare it to other de-luxe hotels in the world.

“Five Stars Going on Three”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2004

My husband and I stayed at Las Dunas from February 21 through 25, 2004.
We were looking forward to relaxation with luxury, service, and great food. The hotel disappointed from the moment we checked in. I had called in January and requested a reservation at the Michelin starred Lido Restaurant for the 21st at 8:00 p.m. When we arrived at the hotel I casually mentioned to the receptionist that we were looking forward to our meal only to be informed that the restaurant was closed until the 25th of the month. No effort was made by the hotel to inform us of this prior to our arrival.

In the middle of our stay we returned in the afternoon to find that our keys did not work anymore. Somehow the hotel staff had decided that we were checking out that day. Fortunately I had my reservation forms to prove that they were wrong. By then housekeeping had gone home and our room had not been cleaned. It was after 7:00 p.m. before someone finally came to clean and that was only after two calls and a visit to reception.

After four nights of heavy perspiration and then chills, my husband and I discovered that the mattress on the bed had been covered with a plastic moisture barrier.

We asked if we could order breakfast a la carte instead of getting the buffet. We were told yes. What we were not told is that the price of the "a la carte" was the same as the buffet. I paid 24 euros for coffee, brown toast, and a bowl of fruit.

When I asked if the reception had any customer feedback forms I was greeted with surprise and told "no". The Luxury Hotels of the World website also does not allow for feedback.

On the plus side, the hotel is nicely decorated and the grounds are beautiful. The acoustic guitar and piano music in the lounge was great.

So in the future, go for the music - but, don't stay.

“Agree with above”

Paid $100 extra for a sea view. Brought me to a room that looked at the tops of palm trees and down onto the pool. I complained and they said, "well, it is in the direction of the sea!". I ******* until they gave me a room on a higher floor, but that room was covered in ants! The beach is a big zero. Nothing. You can't even walk on it. Raised platforms overlooking the beach have nice, big lounge chairs, but we were bitten alive by these huge black flies. Food is ridiculously expensive. Lunch buffet by the pool was $55 US per person plus tax. An ala carte burger was $18. Crazy.
