My partner, my daughter and I have just spent 6 nights at the Caledonia Golf Hotel, Estepona (mid-August 2008). We Googled the directions to the hotel but still got lost, late at night, on the final part of the route!. If driving look for the turn off of from the N340 which is sign-posted ‘Cancelada’ – it’s only a few mins from here and reasonably well sign-posted to the hotel. We have stayed in other 4 star hotels that have probably been better than the Caledonia but this is still a very pleasant hotel and our stay was enjoyable. Rarely have we come across such lovely staff; always smiling, polite and happy to help – extremely approachable. This being the same for staff of all levels and of all areas. We were booked in for one room/half board but were actually allocated an apartment with lounge,diner,kitchen-area, master bedroom with large double bed and plenty of storage, well appointed bathroom and balcony. The sofa-bed in the lounge could accommodate two people and my teenage daughter found it very comfortable. The décor and furniture was very simple but contemporary. We took advantage of the kitchen/self catering facilities to store drinks in the fridge and on some occasions bought food to prepare for lunch which we ate on the balcony – very pleasant. The balcony was accessible from both the master bedroom and the lounge. It was a decent size with table, chairs and clothes-dryer (only took a few hours to dry anything as it was so hot). The kitchen was not very well equipped and if I had been obliged to use the odd mismatch of cutlery, crockery etc it would have been more or less impossible to cater for 3 people. However, that said, it may have been because we were not technically booked in as self-catering. The restaurant was pleasant, especially the outside terrace overlooking the pool area, where we managed to eat all our meals. There was a variety of food of a good standard. The free form pool was lovely, with plenty of surrounding patio and grass/green areas with plenty of sun beds. The only down-side was that there were limited brollies which prompted some people to get up early to stake claim to prime positions by leaving towels on sun beds at the crack of dawn. We ate lunch in the pool-side restaurant only once as we found it very expensive. The inside bar was never busy. Do not expect entertainment here. There is something for the kids earlier but most people (families included) do not go to dinner until late’ish 9.30/ 10pm. This because there are lots of Spanish guests and fewer English/other. You definitely need a car here as the hotel is quite a hike from any shops, banks etc (no currency exchange facility in hotel) but it’s a good location to use as a base to drive about the area. Parking here, like much of the Costa del Sol in peak times is difficult. The ‘free’ hotel car park could not accommodate all so we often had to park on the streets outside but this was not too bad – only a few mins from the hotel, maximum. There is a covered hotel car park on site but this is an extra additional charge (rate unknown). In all - a very pleasant stay with no major problems and beautiful weather!
