Difficult to write this review because we really want to say "bad bad bad" but as we unpick things, it's clear that this was really not the hotel's fault.
We chose this hotel as the very best quality we could afford with the budget we had for our honeymoon.
After a long drive as we pulled up at the hotel we thought "yes, this looks great!".
We are well travelled, particularly with 5 star hotels (although we do not look it.... very interesting to see how this affects the staff in their behaviour). We were greeted as we pulled up by a friendly bellhop who, of course, took our bags. I was expecting him to park the car for us as well but... no.... we had to pay for 10-15 Euros per day for secured parking, and park the car ourselves. Very strange for a 5 star hotel but... ok ... we'll let that one go.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Full marks there. On our booking we requested a smoking room, on a high floor, with sea views.
BE CAREFUL HERE - at this hotel a pool view is much better - it's a layout thing (u-shaped) which is impossible to tell when booking. Not the hotel's fault.
Our room had sea (and ROAD!) views. With 2 single beds (Honeymooners.... helloooo!) and no ashtray. We asked to be moved. The staff were great and moved us to a much better room.
The room was amazing. Easily 5 stars, fantastic bathroom, very luxurious and clean. Even a little button to open the curtains automatically - loved playing with this!
Sadly, this is where our stay started to unravel.
As we went at the end of the season only 2 of the hotel's 7 (or so) bars and restaurants were open. Disappointingly the beach club was closed. The Irish Pub was closed. These were the two we were looking forward to.
I don't expect the hotel to phone every booking and tell them this. In fact they go out of their way to make a point on their advertising about opening times varying, but we were still disappointed.
Ok so we decided to walk (a very long way!) down to the beach to try the local beach bar / chirinquito. Guess what? Closing for winter... this was the last day! They had no beer left, no food and very little of anything else. The waiter had a terrible attitude and charged us 7€ for tinto de veranos (instead of 3 as marked on price list) because these had to be made with 1 can of lemon aquarius (because he had run out of lemonade!). Nightmare. Anyway, not the hotel's fault.
So the first evening we had to leave the hotel because of limited facilities and find a resaturant in the nearby shopping area. Taxi driver overcharged us (trust me, in Spain you know when this is happening) and on arrival there were only 2 places open - 1 cold looking bar, 1 swiss restaurant. EVERYTHING else was closed.
Swiss restaurant was pretty good actually. Expensive but good. The owner is a real character, funny to watch him working. Overcharged again on the way back in the taxi.
The above is, of course.... NOT the hotel's fault.
Ok long story short. Woke up next morning NOT feeling like honeymooners at all. Decided over (an awful) breakfast in a nearby town to leave and drive up to Portugal instead.
Explained the situation to the staff. They agreed not to charge us for the third night, we paid for the second (unused) night. Actually I was really happy with this. Our cancellation policy was specific that they would not refund, but they did. So, full credit to the lovely staff at this hotel.
Summary? don't go out of season. Not great for young couples. Perfect for people who want to relax, enjoy the spa, and do NOTHING.... I mean.... NOTHING :)
The story ends with us happily sitting in a 4 star hotel in Portugal. Enjoying the end of our honeymoon and laughing about the hiccup that was visiting the Barcelo Sancti Petri.
Oh and guess what..... in our new room, tea and coffee making facilities HAVE been provided free of charge rather than at 10€ as with Barcelo. I think we CAN blame them for that one eh?
Room Tip: Ask for a pool view as far to the end as possible (ie. near the beach end).
DONT GO OFF SEASON!
