“Too Noisy to Sleep-Run Away!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2009

Friends of ours saw this hostal while in Cordoba (but didn't stay there). There opinion was it looked like a good place to stay--close to major attractions, attractive courtyards, clean rooms, nice staff. All of those things are true, but the beds were uncomfortable, the ceiling fan didn't work, the AC did work but was really noisy, and worst of all, the noise from motor bikes and cars and, most especially, the trash dumpsters being emptied in the night right under our windows, made this place a nightmare. Also, the next street is full of women who appeared to be prostitutes, which may have accounted for some of the late-night traffic down our street! The hostal is not staffed at night with English speakers. This presented a problem when our friend's door lock was broken (?) and a workman had to be summoned. It took them one and one-half hours to break the lock and get her into her room, which could then only be locked by a flimsy slide-lock on the inside. Meanwhile, she had fallen asleep sitting up in the courtyard!! Maybe this problem is a recurring one, because our door could only be locked while we were inside by use of a similar slide lock. Finally, the hostal says it has parking. Yes, it does. But, you have to drive to a parking garage several blocks away and then walk back through the throng of women soliciting business. Moreover, getting to the hostal is extremely difficult and the hostal did not provide directions when we booked.

“Nice courtyard, quiet location”

Hostal Osio is located very near to all the major sites in Córdoba. The staff was friendly and helpful, giving us a map of the city and pointing out the major sites. Room was large and the bathroom was clean. The central courtyard was charming, to say the least. We enjoyed lounging there as well as on the balcony, where our room was located. There were a couple of couches with magazines. Also there was free internet connection and a small selection of snacks and beverages available for purchase, including beer and wine. Pretty far from the bus station, but the taxi dropped us off as close to the Hostal as he could, considering the narrow (and I mean narrow) streets. All in all a positive experience.

“Too noisy for us to sleep”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2008

Stayed for two nights in March 2008. Plus points are: good staff always present, lovely courtyard, great central location on small street, spacious room, good bathroom, clean and pretty. Minus points are that the bed was pretty old and the hotel was very noisy. People in a nearby room were having a party inside and outside their room until well past midnight and did not calm down when asked politely to do so twice. Could have happened anywhere I suppose, but since the person on the front desk could obviously hear them (they were closer than I was) I wonder why they didn't ask them to be quiet or go back to their own rooms (surely seven people weren't all booked into one room?). Then after the party ended, we slept for about three hours until two women arrived back at the room next to ours (about 5am by this time) and shouted at the tops of their voices to each other until about 7am. The two things I want from a hotel are 1) to be able to sleep and 2) to be able to have a warm shower. Anything else (nice plants in a courtyard outside, for example) is a bonus and yet many hotels don't seem to prioritise these two things. Is it just me? Anyway, it's a good hotel, but take some earplugs. I used really good quality ones and still couldn't sleep so I won't be going back.

  • Liked — Clean, spacious room and good staff
  • Disliked — Couldn't get much sleep as other guests so noisy and staff didn't do anything about it

“STAY BUT NOT TOO LONG”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2008

A very nice location to stay nearby the historic center and the Mezquita. The street is quiet BUT if your room has a window on streetside you will have the nightmare of the garbage van coming at 4 am in the morning and making a lot of noise half an hour. If your room is located on groundfloor, your window will show you that some cars park in front of your room. You might be disturbed by the motor noise when they leave. My room was on the streetside groundfloor number 8. The water wasn't hot enough to have a shower. Vintage equipment in the bathroom. Tropical decoration in the room with a bad surprise : dust at night. The sealing is made of wood and so you are unlucky if the room upstairs is full!!! You are able to ear their steps until they get out out of the hotel.
The bed quality was bad, very old. Humidity on walls. We were two persons, 90 euros for two nights was too expensive if you think about those problems. A hall decoration made of flowers and plants very beautiful, good people helpful but I try an other hotel next time.

“Quiet street, 5 minutes from the mosque”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2006

Just a 5 minute walk east of the mosque in a residential neighborhood, on an incredibly narrow street, with about 5 prized private parking places. The door is always answered by a mature, friendly adult. I was unsure about staying in a place with "hostal" in the name, which conjured up images of bunk beds, and odd teenagers running the place -- This was nothing like that! The managers seemed to me to be a family of brothers and sisters around 60 years old. At checkin, they took the keys to my car, and kept it safely parked out front for free, moving it whenever they needed to. They offered advice for locally favorite restaurants that proved very accurate. Travelers speaking only English may not be able to enjoy this benefit to the full, however, as most staff I spoke to seemed far more at ease with Spanish.
Hostal Osio was a bargain for 45 Euros nightly. The room was perfectly clean. It's an old family home, generously decorated with plants and colorful furnishings. There is a small "internet room" where you can go online with the desktop provided (for a nominal fee), and there is also a hot coffee/tea machine.
My wife and I visited Cordoba for 4-days in mid-December, which is very off-season, but we were lucky to enjoy terrific weather: sunny, highs of 68 degrees, but chilly lows in the 40s. Throughout the south of Spain, heating is used sparingly, but Hostal Osio cranks it up from about 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. which sends you nicely off to sleep, but getting out of bed in the morning can be an eye-opening experience. Obviously this a purely a seasonal consideration and not a concern in the baking-hot summer.

  • Liked — Staying in an authentic, old family home, decorated with a personal touch and lots of plants.
  • Disliked — In mid-December the mornings were chilly! This is probably true throughout southern Spain, however.
  • Tips/Secrets — They will park your car for free throughout your stay!
