“Russischer-style hospitality on Goetheplatz.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

Russischer Hof greets with an atmosphere of the past grandeur yet it is splendidly modernized. It offers the discriminating grandeur of the era of former famous guests as Tzar Alexander I of Russia, whose Imperial coat of arms graces the hotel glass doors; also Liszt, Tolstoy, Schumann, Turgenev; yet the hotel has been made to cater to any contemporary convenience.

I loved that feel of every modern comfort in the opulent ambiance and that very special aura of a place with tradition. My room 406 was tastefully decorated and was impeccable, gleaming and sparkling as new. The room was not big, but it was very cozy and comfortable, and having a private terrace with a view of the distant hills was terrific. The bathtub was great, the bed luxurious. The breakfast was the most varied and generous, including various Thüringen specialties, herring in many varieties, sausages, eggs, pastries, fruits, many other seemingly tasty things which were too much to try; on top of that it included German sparkling wine, and it was is worth every penny of $19 euros. Internet is also free of charge.

The location is very convenient, too - at the edge of the old town, 100 meters from ubiquitous Goethe and Schiller monument. Weimar is pleasantly a walking town, not in tradition of big German cities as Berlin where distances are grand. Here you can walk comfortably from one sight to another in a leisurely and most pleasant way of promenading.

I liked this hotel very much; however I was surprised that my linen was not changed as part of daily room make-up; it seems, however, that it is a modern fashion - the same happened in Hotel Concorde in Berlin where I stayed later on the voyage. And being fastidious, I can add that some other 5 star hotels provide help with bags without asking, turn-down service for the night, freshly squeezed juices, and hair conditioner. Yet this is Weimar, not Paris, and for the price I think the hotel is an excellent value.

I highly recommend Russischer Hof, although comparing it with Hotel Elefant I must say that the latter location is better – on the most beautiful old square in town, Markt, with fabulous views over Rathaus, Lucas Cranach haus, and more. In the local Stadtmuseum there is a photo of Hitler smiling from Hotel Elefant, and Johann Sebastian Bach and Hans Christian Andersen lived nearby. Russuscher Hof is further away and cannot boast such an illustrious locality, which can be viewed as plus or minus, depending on a personal taste. I loved to stay in Russischer Hof and have my evening drink in Hotel Elefant open air café on the Markt square. Weimar as a whole is a marvelous place, full of charm, beauty, culture and history. I am very happy to have discovered such a gem city of Germany, and my stay in Russischer Hof made my voyage all the more memorable.

“Sparkling hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

This is an elegant and historic hotel situated right on the edge of the old town. The reception and lobby are plush and you do not lose this impression as you take the lift to your room. Everything sparkles! The rooms are equiped with flat screen TVs, free Wifi, tea making facilities, safe, comfy beds and a spotless bathroom.
If you don't fancy the pricy breakfast take a stroll over the road where you will find a bakers where you can sit down to fresh bread or croissants and much better coffee than you tend to find in hotel breakfast buffets.

“Faded Glory”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2009

I booked this hotel as a last minute option on the internet and was extremely excited when I was able to reserve a standard room for only € 97 - quite a steal for a 5 star hotel, I thought. Well, apparently there was a reason for this price since our room definitely not a 5 star accomodation. Although clean, it seemed somehow faded. There were rips in the wallpaper and the entire room reminded me of an airport hotel. The bathroom was old fashioned and could use an update. There is a strange glass window between shower and hallway, although one has the option to lower some blinds. The TV was tiny and the lamp on my nightstand was not working right.
My husband likes to sleep on several pillows, but there was only a very small one for each of us. We looked for more, but could not find any. There were, however, two terry cloth bathrobes in the closet.
Of course, we only had a standard room and maybe the more expensive rooms are nicer, but one should be able to expect a certain level of quality in all rooms.
On a more postive note, the staff was extremely friendy and charming and always ready to help. As other reviewers have noted, the location is fantastic. All the sights are within walking distance and the train station is just up the road.
Given the low price for the room, we were not upset about our stay, just do not expect too much.

“Fantastic hotel made a fantastic holiday!”

The situation of the hotel is marvellous, within easy walking distance of all the delights of Weimar. The staff were delightful, helpful and attentive every day of our stay in the hotel. It is true that the cost of parking is rather steep, however the service of the concierge in parking and fetching the car, and the worry free security the service provided was worth it. We had a room with a large balcony looking out to the hills and forest beyond Weimar, given the spectacular weather we enjoyed on this trip, this was an added and unexpected bonus. The hotel breakfast was excellent and basically provided absolutely anything you could wish for, from smoked salmon and bucks fizz to yoghurt and muesli. I would recommend this hotel to any traveller.

“beautiful but missing some essential 5 star qualities”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2009

wanted to surprise my Russian girlfriend with our engagement in the Anastasia restaurant at the Russischer Hof. I had asked specifically in email correspondence if this was possible...of course it was...on paper...arrived and tried to make sure and was told that Anastasia will be closed but was offered the other restaurant. Slightly up-set I agreed, when we eventually came down, we discovered that the other restaurant was a coffee shop...we left and had our celebration with traditional food and black beer instead of fine dining and champagne at a local restaurant close by.
I can not recommend this hotel because it lacks basic 5 star service such as efficient staff, two bathrobes and slippers for double occupancy, Well, they wont see me there...
