Despite having family living in Kiel, we stayed in a hotel for one night this time. My family strongly suggested the Kieler Kaufmann, as it known to be the best hotel in Kiel amongst the locals. We loved it.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. I was late for breakfast and they created no fuss whatsoever, but laid a table for me and made sure I had everything I could possibly need. They serve breakfast buffet style with fresh fruit, different types of bread and musli, eggs, salmon, ham, cheese and more. Great variety!

Our room (No. 103) was huge with a very large bathroom. Both were pleasantly decorated. We had a beautiful view onto the garden and the water. The room was very light, had a large comfortable bed, tv, minibar, sofa and armchair and a desk. It was really very spacious!

The hotel is located in a posh residential area. So if you don't know Kiel, it is a good area for an evening stroll.


Only dinner was a slight disappointment. We had Hering "Hausfrauenart" (a local speciality) served in our room. The food wasn't that good and the portions were tiny.

Very good hotel in a residential area. The building is wonderful with a very well kept garden. We had booked single rooms and they were small but comfortable with a good desk for working, wireless Internett, a good and firm bed, down pillows and quilt, comfortable chair and flat screen TV. No airconditioning. Bathroom was also small but in excellent condition with a good shower. Dinner on the terrace can be recommended. Breakfast was good normal buffet style. For B&B we paid EUR 119 per room, which may be on the high side considering the size of the room, but I will definetely stay there agiain next time I am in Kiel.

On arrival at 23.30 the hotel was flood -lit and looked very welcoming for our 3 day stay. Checking in was very easy despite our poor German, the staff were very helpful and friendly.
The rooms are perfectly functional (I had a larger corner room with both bath and shower), the beds were comfortable with warm duvets. Each room has a mini-bar, TV etc.
Breakfast was a treat - buffet style overlooking the gardens and river - unfortunately on the first day it was shrouded in mist...
On leaving the hotel you find yourself in a peaceful residential area of large houses/mansions. Kiel is walkable (we found it took about 40 minutes... a pleasant walk down by the water-front.
The lounge area is very pleasant with large christmas tree and open fire in December - very welcoming. The staff are attentative for example offering drinks whilst I was sat reading by the fire.
Unfortunately due to on-going building works the hotel was a little noisy especially the early morning drilling, but this is to make more attractive areas for guests.

We stayed here the night before leaving for a Baltic Cruise.
The Hotel is lovely. It is in a park/garden setting, with beautiful flowers surrounding it. It's in a very quiet area, but you can hear the ships blow their horns as they leave the harbor. We enjoyed that. It's a short walk through a beautiful forest area to the water where you can see cruise ships, privately owned boats, etc. A very nice walking area with restaurants, etc. We ate dinner at the Hotel and it was delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful and speak English. My only suggestion would be that they upgrade their towels. For such a first class Hotel, the towels were a bit rough. Other than that, we'd stay there again!
