“Nice Hotel, No Major Faults, Just Not 5-Star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2010

The staff were exceptionally friendly and the hotel easy to find from the station (although the hotel does suffer from being 'too-close' - so despite having 2 quite big bags, the taxi drivers didn't want to take me such a short journey so it was a bit of a struggle with my luggage - maybe the hotel could think in this case about sending their porters directly to the train station??), the reception area is very nice although once you get to the rooms they are a bit of a drop in standard from the perception you get from the hotel exterior and reception. The rooms are ok - a bit basic, a bit tired, but still nice and quiet. One complaint as a business traveller is that there is no wireless internet connection!!
The location is ok - only 5 minutes walk into the centre of Leipzig, which is a wonderful city with many great places of historic interest and fantastic bars and restaurants.
The best thing for me about the hotel was the breakfast, which is set in a downstairs room just off the reception with a lovely ambiance and nice choice of food.
So overall, not bad - just a shame the hotel rooms do not come up to the same standard as other parts of the hotel...becuase as many have said in their reviews, this is certainly not a 5-star hotel...and I think the hotel would be reviewed much more favourably (as it is good value for money) if it dropped a star or two!

“Friendly formal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

Spacious room with huge closet and bath. Wonderful breakfast buffet plus cooked-to-order egg dishes. Turn down service included "bed mat" which we had never seen before (see picture).

“Incredibly good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

I've stayed here twice now and there is only one word to describe it: Bliss.

The rooms are cozy and luxurious at the same time. The service is impeccable. The wellness area (free access) on the lower ground floor is just pure relaxation. A couple of days at the Fürstenhof and you emerge completely refreshed. Honestly.

Probably worth the money at the normal rate as well, but you can often get a good deal at a booking website or at the Starwood website. (3 nights for the price of 2 etc.)

Two minor flaws though.

Bathrooms: The showerheads are fitted in wrong and cannot be adjusted. (The water runs down the wall and onto the little shelf above the bathtub instead of into the tub.)

Breakfast: Shockingly expensive at about 20 euros per person. (Fortunately, there are plenty of nice cafes and restaurants serving 5-7 euro breakfast buffets in central Leipzig.)

“Impressive with room for improvement.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

Hotel Fuerstenhof is certainly an overall good place to stay in Leipzig, especially if one has an inclination to grand hotels with tradition. However, this hotel has some points to improve upon, so I list good and less so points in order:

Good:
The room is gorgeous, luxuriously appointed and very quiet. The closet was huge and well-lit inside; the bathroom excellent, although shower was at the bathtub. The bed was the most comfortable of any hotel I’ve stayed in Germany, better than in Bayerischer Hof or Vier Jahreszeiten Munich, or Hotel Ernst in Koln, or Hotel Concorde Berlin. The turn-down service was prompt. The bathtub problem with malfunctioning drain was quickly fixed. The pool area looked cute. The building itself is beautiful and close to Hauptbahnhof and the center of Leipzig. Internet was not working properly and I was refunded the cost.
The location is quite good, if not too picturesque (see my picture attached), but all the major sights - the art museum (Museum der bildenden Kunste), the Rathaus, the Alte Borse (Produce Exchange) with Goethe statue in front, Maglerpassage with Faust and Mephistopheles, Thomaskirche of Bach, Nikolaikirche - are in walking distance from the hotel.

Not so good things:
Internet is 6 euro per 30 min - should be free as hot water; it is a modern necessity.
The pool is too cold to swim - although the sign says its temperature is at 27 degrees Celsius, it is definitely not as warm as Bahamas waters. The fun showers in a "cave" are of cold water, too. The staff is nice but do not understand English well and overall are not at 5-star hotel service/manners level - they are somewhat awkward and even rude - not hold the door, etc.

Also, the information provided by hotel staff was not always accurate - the taxi to the airport was at 32 euro, not 22-25 euro as they said. In addition the taxi driver overcharged me, pretending not to speak any English and abusing the fact of me being a solo female traveler. I think the 5-star hotel should book appropriate taxi drivers or suggest limo service to avoid such embarrassments. Also, on a practical note, it is probably better to take a taxi to the Hauptbahnhof (5 euro)/5 minutes and from there a direct train to the airport (4.50 euro)/15 minutes which arrives in exactly the same place as the taxi.

Overall, still a good place to stay, considering the above.

“Very good hotel, but no 5-star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

When you sell your hotel as a five-star, you exphave to be up to your reputation. This hotel has not been. Well, hear me well, it is a good hotel. Big rooms, nice pool and spa center, great hallway. For 85$ a night booked on Obrtiz, it's cheap.

But, but, but... The room, in summer, didn't have appropriate A/C. Apparently, it is the case almost everywhere in Germay since electricity costs a fortune in the country. «We have a DDR A/C system», said the front-desk. Ah well... And since we were there during a heat wave, not having appropriate A/C appeared as a downer for our experience.

But, overall, under 125$ a night, this hotel is still a good deal.
