“Pleasant Place to Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

My two sons and I stayed here recently as a stopover on our way to Poland for pottery shopping and to check out the Christmas Market. Having never been to Dresden before I wasn't sure where the hotel was located. The hotel was about a mile away from the Altstadt where the market was. There is a tram a short distance away that the receptionist will help you find. The hotel itself was a nice surprise. There was underground parking available for eight euros a day. A word of caution, the parking is tight even by European standards! The hotel staff was very nice and considerate the entire stay. The room was basic, nothing special but very clean and neat. We needed an extra bed and it was ready and made when we checked in. The beds were so so on the comfort side, but nothing to complain about. The only negative I would say about the room was that there were no bars of soap! There was a soap dispenser by the sink in the bathroom and a shampoo dispenser in the shower/tub. I just put soap in a cup and took it the shower! A really pleasant surprise was a saying on the bathroom mirror, "Carpe Diem." It was a nice way to start the day! The breakfast buffet was very good. There were eggs, sausages, bacon, and an array of other items to tempt a hungry morning palate. I like that each table had their own pots of coffee and milk and I didn't have to wait for the waitress. If I go to Dresden again, I would definitely stay here again.

“Clean, comfortable hotel in a convenient location - not more, not less.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2009

I stayed at this hotel for two nights. It's location in the Neustadt is convenient, close to both the bars, restaurants and bars of the Neustadt and the sights of the Altstadt.

The rooms was clean, modern and airy, with a very large single bed which was moderately hard. No flat screen TV, but many channels. No free water on the room, but a well stocked mini bar.

Check-in was efficient and friendly, as was reserving a room over the phone beforehand.

Staff at breakfast was a bit slow on the second day when the breakfast room was full, and a smile here or there wouldn't have done any bad. Breakfast itself is good though, with all kinds of sweet, hearty, cold and warm dishes.

Overall, a good hotel, but not outstanding - hence four out of five points. Should either add fitness/wellnes facilities or reduce rates for a better rating.

“The usual Mercure offering, this time in in Dresden Neustadt...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2006

I stayed here for a few days in August 2006. I chose this hotel because the three central Ibis hotels (Ibii?) were all full and to be honest the Mercure wasn't much more expensive anyway.

Two months later I can't remember much about the hotel, which shows you have special it wasn't! It's just a standard Mercure offering, perfectly acceptable for the price.

One slightly unusual thing I do remember is that this hotel still has keys which you're expected to hand in each time you leave the building, rather than the more usual keycards seen in most chain hotels nowadays.

I can't comment on the breakfasts as I rarely eat breakfast, and even if I do I won't pay hotel prices for it! There's no restaurant in the hotel itself but there's an "associated" hotel in the building; again, as I didn't try it, I can't comment on it.

Getting there: The hotel is easy to get to from the city centre, with tram stop Rosa-Luxembrg-Platz (line 6) just around the corner. Note that to go into the city centre you have to get the tram which seems to be going *away* from the city centre; it turns back towards the centre at Albertplatz and crosses the Carolabrücke before taking you to the Hauptbahnhof (main station).
The Albertplatz tram stop (served by 4 routes) and the Carolaplatz stop are each about 5 minutes walk away from the hotel.
Information about public transport is at [--].

The nearest rail (train) station is Dresden-Neustadt, but the tramline between there and Albertplatz is closed for work, so the most convenient station is actually Hauptbahnhof. Neustadt station is only about 15 minutes walk, though.

If you prefer to walk into the city, the Zwinger Palace, Theater and the Frauenkirche are all about 15 minutes walk from the hotel, with fine views along the Elbe as you cross the Carolabrücke.

My suggestion: If you intend using public transport *and* visiting the area around Dresden, buy the 72-hour Dresden Regio Card from the tourist information office, which covers travel on local trains and buses to places like Meissen and Bad Schandau. Note that the 48-hour Dresden City Card (whilst 10 Euro cheaper) doesn't cover anything like such a wide area, so it might actually be worthwhile buying the 72-hour pass even if you're not staying in Dresden for three days.
