This hotel is very conveniently located about a mile off the “Dresden Altstadt” exit of the A4 autobahn and as such is very easy to find without the necessity of navigating one’s way through the streets of an unfamiliar city. It is a standard Mercure Hotel, offering clean and comfortable accommodation and more than adequate facilities for the motoring tourist - as I was. A particularly impressive aspect was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The receptionist on duty when I arrived was one of the finest of her procession I have met anywhere - efficient, welcoming and full of good advice when I asked her about getting to the centre of town. The buffet breakfast each morning was superb in range and quality. Not the least of the advantages of this hotel (which is located on the banks of the River Elbe - see photograph) is that it is situated on a direct tram route into the centre of Dresden. While I was staying it was therefore possible for me to leave my car at the hotel car park and take a tram into town, thus not having to worry about parking in the centre. I got of each day at the Postplatz, which is immediately adjacent to the famous Zwinger and all the other wonderful Baroque buildings in Dresden’s Centre. It is also close to the Elbe quays, where the wonderful fleet go restored paddle steams moor - the oldest of these dates back to 1879. A trip on one of these - e.g. upriver to the Summer Palace of the Saxon Kings at Pillnitz, is strongly recommended. A visit to teh Altes Meisters gallery in the Zwinger is also recommendd - this is one of teh world's great art galleries.
