“A Cosy Basic Homebase for Exploring the Area, But WIFI was not working”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2011

My partner and I recently spent 5 nights here while exploring the area. The manager happily let us check in early, and speaks enough English for a non German speaker to easily check in without difficulty.

The building in a lovely 'altbau' old style German home, with a few spaces for parking in the rear courtyard. It is a few minutes from the Sud (South) Trier bahnhof so getting there without a car is easy enough.

Our room was a 'comfort' one, a step above the basic room but a notch below a suite. The walls are THICK, we rarely heard a peep from other rooms, only heard noise from the hallway , which is to be expected with hardwood floors. Lovely tall ceilings and the room itself is HUGE. Television is German channels only, the bed is the typical German 2 singles placed together with 1 duvet per person. Bathroom was modern and everything, including hairdryer worked perfectly. There is a fridge/minibar in the room but no kettle for tea/coffee ( that would have made the room perfect).

Breakfast was fantastic and the manageress kindly called our room 15 minutes before breakfast was to end to see if we wanted to eat ( This was at 945 am so no intrusion). I could not have expected a heartier spread, it was amazing. There was a dining room with ample space for all to enjoy breakfast.

The only minuses of this hotel were that the wifi did not work at all, the manager tried to explain it was a WEP password, but all options were tried and none worked, another guest complained of this as well, so it was not our laptops. This was rather dissappointing as free wifi was one of the deciding factors in us selecting this hotel. Otherwise we had no complaints about the hotel itself.

The external minus about the hotel is located about a 10-15 minute walk from the 'fussganger' ( central pedestrian only) part of Trier. This would be enjoyable in summer but is miserable in winter. The places to eat are definitely from Kaiserstrasse north, there is not so much other than Asian and kebap shops nearby.

I would stay here again, but only in warm weather on account of the distance to the shops/sights/restaurants!

“It is Hard to Get Excited About This Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2009

I chose the Alte Villa because it was close to the ERA Congress Center where my conference was held and the Villa Hugel (which is closer) was booked. It has a lot of problems. First, there are no decent restaurants nearby so if you want a decent meat you are looking at a 15-20 minute walk into the Centrum. Second, the wireless internet was awful -- when it was working, which was infrequently. Third, my room smelled or cat pee which they solved by plugging in an air freshener. Fourth, if you want a hot breakfast get there when it opens because once the food is gone you are SOL. Fifth, there is no bar soap in the shower -- only liquid soap -- and no wash rag. Sixth, forget the TV: a few local stations and CNN International on a small TV and that's it. Stay at the Plaza in the Centrum instead of here.

“Nice room but too far from town for us”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2009

This is a very quaint hotel where my husband and I stayed for one night while visiting Trier. We chose this hotel for price and character and both were good but we failed to realize just how far of a walk it would be to get to the center of town. We did have a car but we chose to park at the hotel and then walk the town to see all the historical sites. You need to know that there is quite a bit of walking to this town so walking about 5 city blocks to get to your hotel was tiring after walking all over the town. Also - you have to walk through a, um... I don't want to say "bad" part of town because we were never scared or anything, but it was less than "pretty".

The staff was friendly with limited English

Breakfast was FANTASTIC - one of the best arrays of food that I had during my entire 5 days in Germany. The tables were so cute and quaint with fresh roses on the tables, the food was good and plentiful.

The room was nice, not large but not small. Clean, with internet connection. The tv was very tiny but we didn't really use it anyway. Parking was available in the courtyard and on the streets (free)

We did not eat at the restaurant but they had a beautiful courtyard.

This hotel would have had an excellent rating if it was simply closer to town, but if you don't plan on doing a lot of walking around the town then the walk wouldn't be bad.

“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2008

We like to stay in small hotels with local color. This hotel provided a pleasant solution. Two couples stayed in two rooms one night in early June 2008. The rooms were small but not cramped. There was a desk and a large bathroom. Wi-Fi Internet access is available if you have your own laptop. We did not eat dinner in the restaurant because it was closed the one evening we were there. The included buffet breakfast was above average. Parking was available on the street.

I do not know if the rooms are air conditioned so check on that if it will be hot while you are there. Our rooms were on the ground floor and I noticed they had portable ramps for wheelchairs over the three stairsteps to our rooms. Some rooms are up one floor.

The hotel is located about three blocks from Highway 51 so it is easy drive to other places in the town. Our rate was 99 Euros per night per room.

We would have enjoyed staying longer at this hotel.
