“Terrible - don't expect them to honour your booking”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

I have been travelling to Trier for over twelve years staying, twice a year, at the two Mercury hotels as were, decided to test out Hotel Paulin as a new place to stay since was tired of the Golden Tulip and the Mercury trying to charge for internet. Least these hotels honoured credit card bookings, the Paulin does not in bumps you on arrival as being "over booked" aka we can make more money by taking another booking than one placed two months ago. After driving for four hours from Dunkirk being rewarded with "their is a problem" and you can't stay here since we are over booked is shabby and underhand, poor business processes and whatever else you like to levy on a hotel that decides to cancel your booking without notice since they can make more money by taking a short term booking than one made long term on lower rates with a credit card guarantee.

Advice don't use this hotel since they are unreliable and have poor business ethics and treat you like a backpacker.

“An excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2010

Stayed here one night. I Chose this hotel due to location and price, and after reading the reviews of people who had stayed there.

I found the location excellent, the service was fine, the cleanliness was good, the room was large, the mattresses seemed new, and very comfortable, the bathroom appeared newly decorated. Breakfast was good. Since my room faced sideways, it was very quiet (no street noise).
There’s a lift, though, my room was only on the 1st floor, so I had no problems using the stairs. There’s a bar at the front of the hotel, but, I didn’t try it. Also, since Norma’s cheapie supermarket and in-store bakery are right next-door, it’s easy to get yourself some food if you want it.

I will go back, and would recommend this for other travellers with or without a car. The hotel had a car park (not sure how many spaces are available).
There are many bus stops nearby, and the station is an easy 10 minute walk away.

It is useful to know a little of the German language to assist if you want to ask for something, as not all of the staff had a good command of English. I am sure they would go and find someone who did speak English, as they seemed pleased to help.
It did gave me a chance to practice a little German anyway!

A few things not so good:
The flow of water in the shower was better than average, but not what I was expecting.
The air seemed somewhat stuffy, both in my room, and in the restaurant. (Next time, at least I will make better use of the window in my room).
The breakfast seemed lacking in quantity. Having stayed in a few hotels in Germany, normally I have found the breakfast to be very generous (I guess the Germans want to get value for money, because ‘they’re worth it’). I am used to helping myself to having about 4 small cups of coffee with my breakfast, though I had to ask for a pot, as there wasn’t any on sight. I think they would normally ask customers if they wanted coffee, but just missed me by chance.
Although, there was a good choice of food, it felt like, there might not be enough to go around. Indeed the rolls ran out, about 45 minutes before the end of the breakfast serving time. I was going to ask if they would provide some more, though, one of the waitresses returned with just a small supply to keep us going. It just felt like everyone was being encouraged to only have a small amount of everything.
The view from my window, was the car park, and the back of Norma’s superstore (not picturesque, just plain).

“Good Breakfast and Decent Rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2009

I stayed at the Hotel Paulin with my wife and my parents in two double rooms. The hotel was a good price which influenced our decision a great deal as we were only there for one night. The breakfast in the morning was the standard german breakfast buffet spread, with good coffee and nice baked goods. Our room was a corner so the light was better than my parent's room. The bathrooms were enormous in both rooms and well fit out. The ceilings in the room were high, but the curtains were an odd purplish color that gave the room a strange feeling when the light from outside was shining through. I won't comment on the beds other than to say that German hotel beds are all the same - two hard beds pushed together. The hotel had parking which was down a strange car elevator. The front desk was only moderately helpful at recommending restaurants and giving directions - I think we got a new guy. The location of the hotel is good because you are close to the Porta Negra (its right down the street), but the hotel is located on the outskirts the medievel city centre and the immediate streets are not that nice. Oh, and our rooms faced the street in front of the hotel which were pretty noisy at night. We are city dwellers so we were not bothered, but other people might be.

“Going back again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2009

Family run hotel near the main sights in Trier. A solid three star hotel, very clean, well maintained, everything works well. Found the staff very friendly and helpful. Will stay there again in Trier.

This is not a luxury resort nor is it trying to be but for one or two nights or if you're looking for a bargain this is an excellent choice.

Breakfast was better than I've had in similar German hotels,

“Excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2007

This was my second stay at the Paulin - the first had been a result of a booking mix-up with another hotel, but turned out to be very fortunate. This is a very pleasant hotel with plenty of facilities, an excellent breakfast buffet, friendly service and a convenient situation just outside the Porta Nigra. I shall certainly stay there again. My companion on the first visit found traffic noise a bit of a problem in the rooms at the front, but she's used to living in a very quiet place, while I live on a main road.

  • Liked — Breakfasts and convenient location
  • Disliked — Some people might find the traffic a problem, though I personally don't.
