I've stayed at some very mediocre Mercure's in Europe. Happily, this was not one of them.
Previous reviewer's comments that the outside doesn't match the inside are true. Outside it appears to be a bland, functional, cubical building. Inside, rather spacious and uncluttered. Large open lobby. Room was very nice. Also rather large with modern, but smart and solid, furniture. Modern bathroom, also spacious. All nicely decorated. Looked like the place had been recently re-furbished – especially the carpets.
And nothing looked cheap as with some other Mercure's.
A modern safe, medium size fridge (full of Mercure drinks), lots of closet space.
Pay parking behind the hotel and underground somewhere nearby. We parked behind because it the first place we saw. No problems parking, but as we arrived late afternoon, the competition for the spaces was just becoming spirited. The lot was more than half empty at 7:00 am, so must be people using the lot for other than hotel business.
We did have the breakfast as we needed to leave early and didn't think that we would find a place along the road. My wife paid, so it didn't sting too much. It was pricier than most, but I thought it was very good. Not your typical one table of food. There were multiple stations for various items, much like a resort hotel breakfast buffet. The lady who ran it knew what she was doing and took care of everything. When my wife slopped her tea, she was there in a flash. Very gracious person. Other staff throughout the hotel were also very good. Polite and courteous and quick to offer help or suggestions.
The location for Trier is very good. Just across the road from the Porta Nigra. Once through that, you are on the pedestrian street. Trier isn't that big, so you can walk almost anywhere downtown from the hotel. We also had a room facing the Gate. Great view, and once the window was closed, no street noise.
I can see how one reviewer indicated that the room charge was "a la carte" with no extras and that the hotel pushed buying extras. I have to admit that they did offer things (breakfast, parking) when checking in without indicating that it was not included in the room charge. But I think that they were trying to be helpful (or plan the number of breakfast guests) rather than tricking a guest into spending more. I was prepared for what was included in the room charge, so I went into this well-aware and there were no surprises on the bill.
Driving to the hotel is easy, but if you approach from the opposite side of the road, there is no U-turn, so you need to go left into the city and then find a place to turn around. Not that easy. If you approach from the hotel side of the road, it's a snap.
Decent size flat screen TV half a dozen English speaking channels – unfortunately, all news channels.
Also, our room was an adjoining room. No noise next door, but maybe it was vacant. Also, the adjacent room door didn't have a bolt lock, or a key, so it did feel a bit uncomfortable that the person on the other side totally controlled the security of the door.
Nice hotel, very convenient. Highly recommend it.
