I was visiting Germany and Mainz for the first time to attend a training event and wanted a single room in a moderately priced hotel, in a quiet location. The Roemerstein seemed to suit and I booked online. I e-mailed the hotel to advise that I would arrive about 10 pm.
Buses 6 and 6A from the main railway station pass very close to the hotel but I got a taxi which was perhaps wise, as the hotel is actually off Draiser Str. and I might not have seen the sign directing one down a short lane. The hotel is family run and reception is not staffed after 8 pm or earlier, so I found a letter with instructions on gaining access to the building using a key code and the door card for my room. Be sure to keep the out of hours contact numbers with you as they are essential if your door card doesn't work -- as a colleague discovered!
The L shaped room was of reasonable size, with a small balcony. The bathroom (shower, WC, handbasin) was also reasonably sized. There was a very comfortable single bed. There were few frills: a small TV with just 1 English language station, a
mini-bar and a trouser press. Room and bathroom were quite clean - just a couple of small stains on the carpet - and kept clean during my 4 night stay. Apart from occasional loud voices from the pedestrian walkway beside the hotel I enjoyed peaceful nights.
The buffet breakfast offered a nice variety and the receptionist/secretary/waitress was very attentive, whisking away used plates, cutlery, etc. I did not make use of the limited restaurant facilities nor did I see the sauna and solarium in the basement. The staff were friendly and quick to help with information or an internet check (to confirm that the rail station had left luggage lockers). The receptionists speak excellent English.
While Mainz centre seems a lively, student-oriented city, this hotel is most suitable for solo travellers and couples, or small groups of mature friends, who want a good night's sleep in a small German hotel rather than one of an international chain which happens to be in Germany. I would be very pleased to stay at the Roemerstein again
