“Good Novotel Experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Just stayed one night for business. Located near the train station, but only a 10-15 min walk to the Dom Platz. Front desk staff very helpful. Rooms are decent size but the modern minimalist decor comes across looking a bit cheap. Bathroom amenities are pretty limited: mini bars of soap and shampoo. Towels are a bit thin. Good TV with several chanels in English. Heat worked well and was easy to adjust. Windows could be opened. The walls are a bit thin as I could hear my neighbors TV. Inconsiderate housekeepers were making a lot of noise in the halls rather early in the morning. The breakfast buffet was a bit disappointing...scrambled eggs were dried out and not replaced the entire time I was eating, fruit was also picked over and not refreshed. I don't think it would be worth the 18 euros they charge. Overall not a bad place to stay...I would probably give it four stars if the room furnishings and bathrooms were higher quality. The Hilton is a bit more polished and closer to town...but at a higher price.

Room Tip: The courtyard side of the building is away from the street and quieter.

“Clean well-appointed hotel in Mainz”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

Good location in Mainz. Only a 5-10 minute walk to shops and restaurants in town. Rooms are bright and airy. The restaurant inside the hotel is very nice if opting to stay inside. Good breakfast buffet. Nice and professional front desk staff.

“Good basic value”

The hotel is a good value, and the pool is a plus- the kids loved it, and the adjoining bar was very nice for reading or getting some work done. It is easily walkable from the train station, but if you have luggage or have had a long day, an inexpensive taxi is the better bet over thw walk up-hill. It isn't as convenient to downtown as some of the other hotels are. I was looking forward to treating myself to a massage at the end of a long trip, but when I asked, they no longer had a massage therapist on staff (I am sure this has been remedied by now, but it wouldn't hurt to ask if it's important to you.) The room was decent, although not as nice as the Hilton (especially not the bathroom). We did have a bloodstain (too big for bed-bugs, too small for a crime-scene) on one of the sheets, and when we called downstairs, someone was sent up right away to pull the dirty sheet. The manager then came upstairs personally to make the bed and was upset the sheet had already disappeared (she was not happy about the situation). She gave us all Novotel chapstick to make-up for the trouble.

The breakfast was a little bit pricey, but it was quite a spread and kids eat free with paying adults. All in all, it is a better value than the Hilton and you can get four to a room (impossible at the Hilton). However, the location isn't quite as convenient to downtown, and it isn't quite as nice.

“A good stay, clean and well featured for its 4*'s”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Having stayed here a few years ago chose to return when back in Mainz on business.

It was a good choice. Still the same reliable clean and helpful hotel.

Not too much to say without waffling on about irrelevant stuff!

Minus point is the breakfast is 18 euros of which I have not yet seen a package to include this, that said once your out and about in Mainz there are plenty of options. Also it can feel a little talen over by the airlines as they tend this and most other Mainz hotels as base camp when on lay overs. Non smoking room was right next to the door in the corridor where the smoking section starts and morning and night I might as well have been in a smoking so asked to move and this was sorted no trouble WIFI in new room did not work after I had purchased a 10 hr package with Telekom / TMOBILE so complained at reception as was told to use cable in room and price would be deducted off bill on checkout so no problem there.

Good friendly staff in all places, felt safe and welcome here.

Now the next point was a plus for me but might put some off, the walk to the middle of the city was about 5 to 10mins and had a few challenging gradients / steps / cobbles - I personally enjoyed the walk. If getting around or just not keen on walking would suggest your stay at the Hyatt or one of the 2 Hiltons, if on a budget use the IBIS.

Remember to bring your swimming gear and gym shorts as there is a lovely pool, Finish sauna and small gym.

Shall be back here at the end of Jan 2012.

“Good restaurant, service could be a bit better, location depends on your needs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

Location: outside center so depends what is your purpose of stay. If you want to be close to old city this is a wrong choice. If you want to use as a base to explore the region then it’s ok

Room: relatively spacious, all amenities and functioning. An extra bed was delivered upon request without any problem or surcharge

Service: varied and could be better, really. The cleaning person (Mr Saeed) entered the room despite a clear sign ‘don’t disturb’, was impolite and could not understand our annoyance with all that. His colleagues in the cleaners team tried to cover him explaining he was a trainee, which still did not excuse his rudeness.

Reception: fast, efficient and flexible (re bed etc)

Food: restaurant on -1 floor quite good, with healthy choice of fish/meat/vegi and also very good kids menu! Breakfast not bad too
