When you first arrive, the Hotel Oronto looks a little dated, but once you check in, you realise the owners (seems to be family run) put a lot of effort into ensuring this hotel is the best it can be.
The owners will tell you they do not speak much English, but they are more than able understand everything you might need to ask them and respond. We managed to change a twin room into two singles and ask them where the dry cleaner is.
Most surprisingly we also discovered they have wireless internet. It doesn't seem modern enough to, but they are willing to give you the password to access it.
The breakfast provided is delicious and plentiful. Be warned that this is a northern European breakfast, falling somewhere nearer a continental breakfast (croissant and coffee) than a full English fry up: you will find a variety of types of bread, cured meats, slices of cheese, boiled eggs, muesli and yoghurt.
The room is reasonably sized, well maintained and kept very clean. There is a small desk, a cupboard and a small television. There are plenty of plug sockets around the room, although none by the desk. The room has a single window, which can either be tilted open slightly, or opened fully (inwards). Unfortunately, when I visited in June, it was rather hot and the fully open window was a little inconvenient. Air conditioning would have been preferable.
Possibly most disappointing is that the advertised "twin" beds are actually two mattresses side-by-side with separate duvets. I'm pretty sure this is also what you'd get if you ask for a "double" room! Nevertheless, the mattress is comfortable, the duvets are ok (if a little thick) and the pillows a little too soft.
The en-suite bathroom is as expected, with a good power shower, although in a narrow and slippery bath, with a shower curtain that gets a bit too close! Towels are provided and there are several rails and radiators to hang things on to dry.
As for location, the Hotel Oronto is located on the corner of an industrial estate on the west of Koblenz near the river Mosel. It is about 15 minutes walk away from the university and 15-20 minutes walk from the town centre.
Being close to the river, it is very pleasant to take a stroll along the path next to the river when going into town, even though it takes a little longer than the direct route. Close by is an ALDI supermarket, a dry cleaner and a cafe. Restaurants and bars a little further afield. The Hotel Oronto has a bar, but does not serve lunch or dinner.
The hotel closes the front door in the evening, but does provide you with a front door key, so you do not have to worry about what time you return. The metal keyring (which looks like a wedged door stop) is a bit too big and heavy.
Overall, I was fully satisfied with this hotel. The staff are helpful, the rooms are clean, the bed is comfortable and the breakfast is good. I could not spend a holiday in the room alone, but if visiting Koblenz on business or for tourism this is a great value location to stay.
