“Definitely not built for romance!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

We've visited Muenster before for the Christmas markets and had the good fortune to stay at the Mauritzhof Hotel. Unfortunately, we left it too late to book and ended up this weekend in the Moevenpick Munster.

I'll start with the good points:

1. The rooms are big, clean and as advertised.
2. The hotel is closer to the town than you think, being a 20 minute walk around the lake into the centre.
3. It's easy to reach from the ring.

Now for the bad bits:

1. The parking is ludicrous at 13 euros a day in the underground car-park. It should be free for hotel guests.
2. No free wifi.
3. Breakfast is ridiculously priced at 17.50 pp. They give you these breakfast cards and even though they ask you if you are aware breakfast is not included it is a ridiculous system because you must present the cards back at the reception if you didn't use them otherwise you get charged.
4. The beds were very soft and there were not enough pillows. No climate control.
5. Bathroom fan didn't work properly, the towels were flimsy and although there were amenities they didn't appear to be generous.
6. Quite a long wait at the check-in and check-out and lots of superfluous people stood about who did not appear to know what they were doing or why they were there.
7. Our room was not ready for 2 pm check-in and we were offered no alternatives.
8. The bar is a smoker's bar.
9. Characterless and uninviting hotel.

I wasn't 100% disappointed with my stay as we had only intended to visit the Christmas markets, but if I had planned a proper weekend break for just the two of us as a romantic break I would have been sorely disappointed. Back to the Mauritzhof next time.

Buyer beware!

“Good sound hotel”

Thankfully little changes - still easily accessible - a good walk from the town-centre though - but well maintained, easy to park, well trained staff, good restaurant, excellent food and reasonable room. Only comment - the room was looking dated with its eco-hardboard style. Time for some fresh paint and a bit of a make-over.

Room Tip: Worth asking if any of the rooms have had a make-over ...

“Beautiful rooms and Swiss standards of service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

Beautifully appointed and spacious bedroom with an interesting layout of furniture to complement the odd shape of the room; well equipped bathroom (although no bidet). All the accessories and equipment you could imagine. Superbly comfortable bed. Check in and out were warm and efficient. Most of my meals (including breakfast) had to be taken outside but I had a couple of pleasant dinners, although the menu is overly Germanic and heavy for my taste. Good selection of wines and the two I tried were good and fairly priced (by London standards). Minibar prices were also fair. Service in bar and restaurant was excellent. Main complaint was having to pay for wifi: I was not paying the bill but for what I imagine is the tariff I would have expected free internet connection. (This point has been made to the management in their follow-up survey to which I had a very courteous reply.) Cannot comment on the location since I was picked up and dropped off every day.

“easy parking, good location, good room and good food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2010

Thankfully there is very little to add - a good choice of hotel, easy to find, easy to park in the underground carpark (a bit expensive perhaps), check-in a little problematical as I was given an already-occupied room to start with, and a good meal in the restaurant with a good S American red wine.

Room was comfortable and a good size - good shower, and breakfast was ample with a thoroughly good choice. Attention from the waitress was a bit tardy - got fed up of waiting for a second cup of coffee - but the guy who looked after us for dinner was excellent.

Check-out was a bit lethargic - they really should react when the queue grows (a member of staff was simply watching the queue grow rather than rolling up her sleeves and getting stuck in) and I really did not need a cardboard sleve for the receipt.

Despite the niggles - all in all a good place to stay.

“Great breakfast, nice location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2010

We stayed for a short trip to explore the sights of the Muensterland, and the Moevenpick was an ideal base. For me its important that they have a gym. They have a gym. dont expect the same level like you might be getting in 4-star hotels in Asia, but its there. The breakfast in the morning is great. We did not need to go for lunch afterwards. The drawback is - its great. Which means it attracts not only hotel guests but also locals to enjoy a nice weekend start. I overheard people asking for booked tables for breakfast, so it might be worth doing that as well, even if you are a hotel guest.
The hotel is located right along a lake, and it gives you the holiday atmosphere. You can easily walk into town within 15 minutes. And along the lake there are some nice eateries - have to admit, I did not have the time to try them all out.
What I found disappointing is the way they handle car parks. The parking spots right outside the hotel, on the hotel grounds are free. they tend to be occupied rather quickly, and then you have to either place your car outside the hotel compound (something I would not do in the woods at night) or park in the garage. Thats not free however, and irregardless whether you are a paying, staying guest or just have your dinner there, you have to pay for the car park. I think they should reserve free parks for guests of the hotel, and let the people just coming in for a meal use the garage.
And one more gripe - come on guys, this is 2010. Really. Internet should be free in the rooms. Every time I stay in a hotel in Germany I feel like they cant decide whether they want to be high tech or rather go back to the good old times of postal carriages.
