“Nice hotel in the former "coal capital" of Europe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

I liked the view from them window and breakfast. My room was a renovated one on 15th floor, but bathroom smelled a bit. Also the balcony was completely covered with birds' excrements, so I did not dare to step out there even the view was great.
Sleep quality was surprisingly good. Also temperature in the room was just right. Explored both hotel bars and restaurant. Restaurant can boast quite a good service. Menu was everything about goose. It seems like one day a flock of geese was flying over Gelsenkirchen and restaurant management decided to shoot some... Spanish wine was tasty. Still I consider the restaurant a bit pricey. There are 2 bars downstairs. One is non-smoking, where you can eat quite a decent dinner, the other one is smoking and good only for drinking. Try local beer, it's a good one for sure.
I could not say anything about location because stayed in this hotel as it was the cheapest offer to attend trade fair in Dusseldorf, every morning at 8am I was picked up and dropped off around 8pm, so there was no chance to see the city, though I think it's really worth it. City has a rich history, especially in 19-20th centuries when it was the capital of coal mining in Europe.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors might be better and refurbished, ask for them.

Thank you for choosing our hotel! We appreciate your kind feedback!

Located right next to the city gardens and within walking distance to the city centre, our hotel provides elegant accommodation in the centre of town. Indeed, all visitors are astonished at the brilliant view over the area from the upper floors and we are quite proud of it.

Occasionally there are wild birds flying by and are resting briefly on some of our balconies. We are aware of this and are working constantly on removing their leftovers.
Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences this may have caused to your stay.

We are happy that you are satisfied with our staff and service and will be pleased to welcome you again as our valued guest!

Best regards!

“Worn down hotel, noisy. Has many services but sleep quality is bad.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

A early 70s hotel that looks like it. Rooms very average. It needs refurbishment.
Very, very noisy, because of the road and bad window isolation.
A surprise in the form of an astray full of cigarretes was awaiting for me in the balcony of the room. You have to specifically ask for a non-smoking room, or you wil not know what you get.
Internet costs around 15euros.
The rest was fine, and the staff nice. But who cares, if you travel for business and you cant sleep well, the rest is totally irrelevant.
I would not stay here again.

Room Tip: make the impossible to get a room in whereve they think it is quieter. And make sure you ask for a n...

“Nice hotel, except for a lingering smell of smoke everywhere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

I stayed for 5 nights at this hotel for business and mostly had a good expereience. The rooms were large, the staff was very helpful, there is a bar, a pub, and a restaurant on site as well as a sauna and pool. You are a short (5-10 min) walk from the center of Gelsenkirchen and right next to a park with a lake and pretty gardens. Unfortunately, having asthma I'm hyper sensitive to smoke and I found myself constantly frustrated with the smell of stale smoke thorought the hotel - the hallways and the lobby were especially bad. The rooms do not have AC but have a nice balcony with a full door and window so you can keep those open in the warmer months and it cools the room down reasonably well. I stayed on the 10th floor so I had a nice breeze going into my room. This is the only place I stayed on my trip that actually had a bathtub, as well. The hotel does seem a bit on the older side and you can notice a few signs wear in things such as the room couch.
In short, if smoke bothers you, I don't recommend staying here, but otherwise the experience was positive and this is a very good hotel with lots of nice features that few other hotels will offer.

This hotel exceeded my expectations on all counts. I stayed a week, on business, and was
so pleased by the friendliness of the staff, the lovely park outside my window, the superb and abundant breakfasts . . . really an unexpected pleasure.

“Very average and in need of refurbishment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2011

Very average hotel and in need of refurbishment. Rooms just adequate. Friendly staff and good breakfast buffet. Incredibly no heating or air conditioning controls or thermostat in room. Heating is centrally controlled and distributed through ducting, so it's take it or leave it. Would not stay there again.
