This is a nice hotel and convenient for the centre of Essen, the train station and also Ruttenschied Strasse (15 min walk) where there is a huge choice of restaurants and boutique-type shops. Its is next to the Philharmonie and almost next to the Opernhaus. There is an underground station outside the front of the hotel and a small (but pleasant) park at the back.
The hotel is quiet, well run with very attentive, helpful staff. The restaurant and room service are reasonably priced with a reasonable choice. The bar has a good atmosphere.
The only downside is that not all rooms have tea and coffee, and some of the decor is dated although in good condition and well maintained. It does feel like it is 10 years out of date. The hotel tends to be warmer than myself and many of my British colleagues would like but the windows do open.
I have spotted the German national football team statying here on a few occasions.
The beds have feather quilts (or at least the rooms I have slept in do) which were so nice that I had to change to a feather quilt myself!
