“well appointed, large rooms, quiet, friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2010

We chose the Hotel An der Gruga because of other TA reviews and because of it's location. The hotel is on a quiet side street and yet only a block from a main road into town from the south. This made it easy to find. We found free parking in front of the hotel, but failing that they have private parking in back. A few hundred feet from the front door is the underground into town. Are purpose was to visit the Folkwang museum. A quick ride on the metro took us to within a few blocks. We walked back in about 15-20 minutes so it was not far.

The rooms at the hotel are large with plenty of room in the bathroom. There was plenty of places to put our stuff and a desk for working with our laptop. There's free wifi. There are also comfortable chairs. For a few more Euros there are even larger rooms in the extension. As it was raining, we opted to stay in the main building. The room had nice furniture and we enjoyed the little time we spent there in the evening. It was pleasing to the eye and relaxing. It was also quiet. I'm a very light sleeper and had no problems sleeping.

Breakfast was one of the best we had during our week in Germany, with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and fried mushrooms. The usual cereals, breads, cheeses and hams were also available.

The staff were very helpful. We asked about one site and they didn't have any info. But when we returned later in the evening and got our key the info was waiting for us. We were very impressed by that and their willingness to show us the larger rooms and let us decide which of the available rooms we preferred.

“Modern, comfortable and friendly small hotel”

This hotel came highly recommended, and I can see why. Starting with the staff, everyone is friendly and helpful. At least one person will be available who speaks very good English. As an example of the service, I asked a young lady who was a breakfast attendant whether the bowl of "quark" was sour cream. She looked it up, and told me it's curds. The breakfast is in an attractive room, buffet-style, with fine quality sliced meats (which I don't eat) and smoked fish (which I do), also a large bowl of assorted cut fresh fruit, with apples, oranges, kiwis and pineapple in the mix. The breads are fresh and varied, with many spreads, and there are excellent soft cheeses, also assorted raw vegetables, and, of course, cereals, juices and mineral waters. This morning there were scrambled eggs, hot tomatoes with cheese, and very good sauteed mushrooms, also bacon.
I booked a Business Plus room, which has a Nespresso coffee machine and a Nintendo Wii, as well as a large-screened TV, and a clock radio with an iPod dock.
The bathroom has good lighting, with a convenient magnifying mirror, and an excellent shower. Two washcloths are provided, in addition to the towels.
The single bed is very comfortable, with top quality sheets.

“Great Boutique Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2008

I have stayed here every October for the last 4 years and for the price it's a great value. The staff is very accomodating and the breakfast (included in price) is excellent. The rooms are good size and clean. A train stop is 1 minute away and the convention center across the street. There's a great vegetarian restaurant nearby called the Zodiac. Excellent food. Even my meat-loving German friends really liked it.

“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2008

I have stayed at An der Gruga numerous times over the past 10 years and have never been disappointed. It's an excellent hotel, impeccably clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful and most importantly, they make you feel right at home. You are a name and not a number. The rooms are large, big flat screen tv's, newly renovated bathrooms and a cappuccino machine in some rooms. The breakfast spread is plentiful and the rolls fresh and delicious. It's in a great location, a stone's throw from the convention center and within walking distance of abundant restaurants, bars and shops. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone -whether on business or vacation.

“Comfortable and well-run hotel!”

This is just a great hotel. It's comfortable, attractively appointed and very clean. The bedroom I had was spacious and the bathroom brand new and immaculate. The only drawback was that the shower was very small. Breakfasts are wonderful. The hotel staff even try to accommodate American travelers by offering eggs and bacon, not at all common in Germany or Europe generally. The hotel practically sits on top of the convention center and it's right next to a major subway station, and so it's convenient to get around from there. The neighborhood is also Charming with lots of good German and ethnic restaurants. Highly recommended!!
