“Hotel survives thanks to lack of quality five star hotels in Essen - not because of its exceptional service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2011

A very friendly hotel - for sure - but not one deserving of five stars. It is the little things that were missing/went wrong - our room key could not be found on check-in; complimentary water in the room but no bottle opener; coffees are delivered to the room with no explanation as to which is de-caf and which is normal coffee; strong kitchen smell in stairwell. All of these little things are tolerated in a 4-star hotel but should definitely not be part of a 5-star stay.

The hotel survives thanks to the lack of five star hotels in Essen - tradeshow visitors have little choice in the area for a five-star hotel. Definitely not a destination hotel.

“Cosy respite from the snow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2010

Very helpful staff arrived with umbrellas and helped with the luggage from an icy and mushy car park (the regular car park was occupied by a Christmas Market). Check in was very efficient - they just show you to your room and leave the paperwork with you to complete at leisure. Our room, 29, was quite large with views over the park, comfy bed (twins pushed together and separate duvets), desk and a large wardrobe. The wardrobe contained a fridge with complimentary soft drinks as well as beers etc. There were also delicious home baked biscuits and truffles on arrival and fruit. There is free wifi, which is good, though not the fastest. There is a large white-tiled bathroom, with a big bath, and shower over and two sinks. The bathroom was very warm, but the room itself struggled to get warm (it was -6 outside!). There is a turndown service, which changed our towels, emptied bins etc. We ate in the cheaper of the two restaurants, and the food and service were both excellent. The Christmas Market in the courtyard had quite a few stands including crafts and currywurst.

“Great ambience, world class service and true gourmet food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2009

My wife and I stayed at Schlosshotel Hugenpoet for 2 nights in April for a romantic getaway. Germany is not the obvious choice for that but we like small Leading Hotels and have been recommended Schlosshotel Hugenpoet by a friend and certainly didn’t get disappointed, the stay exceeded all our expectations. The hotel is in a medieval castle surrounded by water and you have to cross two little bridges to get into the Courtyard with the hotel entrance. The hotel staff is very attentive and we settled in quickly. We stayed in a Junior Suite, beautifully appointed and spacious. On the first night we had dinner in the gourmet restaurant Nero. The service was impeccable and the food well worth a Michelin star. On the second night we dined in the second restaurant which has an honest, down to earth menu with good value for money. The ambience of this Hotel is truly breathtaking, complimented by great service and food, highly recommended!!

“The best hotel in Essen, but expensive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2009

The "Hugenpoet Hotel" is definitely the best choice in Essen, if you can afford it. It's very expensive, but it's worth the salt. Luxurious, spacious rooms, elegant and tastfully furnished, partly with antiques. Fantastic and courteous service. The breakfast is also excellent. You can have it on your room as well. There are also 2 restaurants, the star awarded cuisine of "Nesselrode" (short Nero), which is excellent, but also expensive. And the "Hugenpöttchen", which offer regional noble cuisine for an acceptable price. If you don't want to spent so much money for your restaurant visits, you should definitely try the "Hugenpöttchen".

“A real leading hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2008

Excellent hotel. Very spacious rooms. Very good service and friedly people. Not cheap. Good breakfast. The main restaurant is very good. The small restaurant Hugenpöttchen offers regional cuisine. Good but not spectacular. Limited choice.
