“Great hotel, great location, good breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2009

The website we bookd with stated we could check in from 7am (which we thought was odd), we arrived at 11am and were told it would be 1pm until we could check in, but the staff were friendly and let us leave our luggage there.

The staff were friendly and efficient, though the housekeeping staff were rather persistent in cleaning our room when we were still in it! We told them to come back in 30 mins and they came back in 10, then they walked straight in after knocking!

The room was a lot larger than what I expected, even the bathroom, both of which were very clean. This is a basic, comfortable hotel.

The room was nice and warm with large windows if you wanted some fresh air. Our room was near a busy road, but it wasn't very loud in the evenings. There is a bar next door though that played loud music, but this didn't bother us too much, but our room was right at the bottom so I should imagine others wouldn't be interrupted.

I agree that the main corridor and stairway occasionally smelt of smoke, I think some of the rooms are for smokers, but the rooms themselves didn't smell at all.

The breakfast at the hotel was great, with cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cheeses, meats, jams, bread rolls and hot options.

The location of the hotel was brilliant. We had friends staying in 3 different hotels. City Apart was the cheapest and the closest to town. It is around 5 minutes to the main shopping street, 10 minutes to the old town and 10 minutes to the main station.

“Hostel, not Hotel!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2009

There is only 2 good things about this place and that is the location and the breakfast.
We took my mum who is 71 and has only 1 lung so suffers with her breathing. There are no lifts, and we were put on the 3rd floor (6 flights of stairs) and couldn't move rooms. The place smells of stale cigarettes. The rooms were terrible. It is called a hotel but is actually a hostel. If you want to stay somewhere nice (3* or above) then give this a wide berth.
There were satins on our bedrooms walls, the mattress on one of the beds had a huge dip in it so was really uncomfortable and the other 2 beds creaked when you turned over. The double glazing was a joke, it sounded as though we had left the windows open, you could hear everything.
The duvets on the beds were summer density so i asked for more bedding and was told we could only have one per person and to put the heating on. My mum can't do with the heating with her asthma! She eventually took me to another room to pinch their duvets but the following day when the maid came in they had been taken back again!
The water kept coming through the floor in the bathroom everytime next door flushed their toilet. The bathroom window wouldn't close properly and it was -4 degrees outside.
The staff could hardly speak english, apart from one man who I think was the owner. He was nice. I asked him for 2 light bulbs as 2 of ours had blown and he quibbled that he had only just bought them and they cost 2.50 euros each. I eventually got them but had to put them in myself.
The good things were the breakfast, and the location, within walking distance to station and town centre. (15 mins to town centre, 5 mins to station).
Would I stay here again? only if there wasn't another vacancy anywhere else or i was desperate. It isn't even that cheap!

“Reasonable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2008

An average hotel, but ideally located between the railway station and the town centre. It took us 5 minutes to walk to either location.

The check in area (which doubled up as the breakfast room) was, as you'd expect, quite large but also very understated. The staff were very efficient - we were checked in and in our rooms within 10 minutes, not bad for a group of 8.

Our rooms were on level 3 of a 4 storey building. The bedroom was big enough for three single beds and a wardrobe, with a tv attached to the wall. There was also a small cooking area with microwave oven and a hob which led directly into the large bathroom. Size wise, there were no complaints, although the bed that I slept in wasn't the comfiest and the pillows were as thin as a sheet of paper. And there was no tea or coffee available!!!

The breakfast made up for these slight niggles. A huge German breakfast was available - cold meats, cheeses, cereals, pastries - and a member of staff on hand to replenish the stocks as and when required.

Location wise this hotel had a big thumbs up from me. Close to both railway staion and town centre it was easy to base yourself here.

“Basic, friendly, great location”

Stayed here with two teenagers and an 11yo, in the large quad room on the top floor.

Good things:
Big spacious room, good breakfast included, great location, very friendly and welcoming, lots of towels, big bathroom, basic but adequate kitchenette, no trouble getting extra cutlery/dishes/supplies from the hotel kitchen so we could prepare our own food

Not so good things:
The electrics looked a little dodgy, as noted by a previous reviewer, and the place, while clean, wasn't immaculate. For example, we found a sock from a previous guest under the bed! |

Great location though, very friendly, and nothing was a hassle.

My teenagers were amused by the fact that the vending machine in the hallway dispensed beer as well as coca cola!

“Welcoming hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2008

An excellent budget hotel in central Dusseldorf.

We arrived tired and stressed out just before midday, and the receptionist was welcoming and good-natured. He said we could check in at once, so long as the room had been readied.

It had, so we got the keys and climbed the stairs to the second floor.

The room was large, clean and quiet. The hotel is a bit old-fashioned (decor and furnishing) but our accomodation was well-presented and with lots of room and bags of space to spread out. A good sized free-standing wardrobe, added cupboard space in the vestibule and a large shower room (no bath).

Some electrical fittings looked a bit wobbly. There was a clock-radio that didn't work, at least I couldn't adjust the time or set the alarm. TV had lots of channels, only one English language channel (BBC News-24).

The twin beds (close together they made a good-sized double) were comfortable and clean. There was a bright orange sofa-bed with cushions.

What I appreciated most was the welcome, and the manager's accommodation to our needs. No fuss and bother. We paid up-front before getting the keys.

Altogether a good place to stay, very reasonably placed and good value for money.

Klosterstrasse is equidistant from the Hbf and the Altstadt, about ten minutes walk in either direction. The Hotel offers a Rheinbahn runaround ticket for 2 Euros as a concession.
