November 17-18, 2007 – I had the opportunity to spend one night at the
Avidon Airport Hotel near Dusseldorf Airport in Germany.
My business colleagues and I had attended Medica Trade Fair and needed
a hotel close to the airport for an early morning flight. The Avidon was a good choice. The room rate, after Medica, was $47 Euros, including VAT and breakfast. We had to leave before breakfast was served.
Check-in was fast with all reservation information in order. We received the non-smoking rooms that we had reserved. My room was #205 at the end of a short hallway. My strongest impression was that the entire hotel was absolutely spotless!
Entering the room there was a stand for luggage and an electronic
“credit card” safe. The safe was large enough for a laptop. It was locked and unlocked by swiping a magnetically encoded card. Not wanting to use a credit card, my AAA card worked to lock and unlock the safe.
My room had two twin beds separated by nightstands. The beds were firm, but very comfortable. I appreciated the down-filled comforter and pillows. The bed linens smelled fresh and clean.
There was a small table and chairs and a good workspace with complimentary wired internet service. Running the Speakeasy internet speed test I clocked download speed from a New York server at 4.4Mbs and upload speed at 238Kbs. There did not appear to be a Wi-Fi signal available.
The bathroom was compact, but very functional, with tile everywhere. Lighting was excellent, almost too bright. There were towels for two on a heated towel rack. The stall shower had a hand-held shower head and a shampoo-body wash dispenser. The bathroom door had a self-closing spring which was defeated by stuffing one of the hand dowels under the door.
The Avidon has a nice bar just off of the reception area. One of my colleagues appreciates fine Scotch and he was impressed with the selection. Many were 6 Euros a glass. Besides Scotch there was a wide variety of other spirits. The front desk associate also served as the bartender.
The hotel is right on a trolley line, but we had a rental car. There is a small fenced parking lot in back of the hotel.
All in all, I was happy with my stay at the Avidon. If I was in Dusseldorf wanting to stay near the airport I would choose it again.
