“Ok for 1 night at cheap price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2008

I stayed at this hotel for one night as I was attending a concert. I was looking for a hotel near Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof, so I got this one. It was a 10 minute walk from the station in a bit of a boring area.

I arrived pretty early and I knew the room wouldn't be ready but I wanted to check in. The person at the desk was not extremely friendly, but in the end I was checked in and told to get the key to the room later (I would only have to mention my name).

When I arrived at the hotel after the concert, I told the reception I had checked in in the morning but had not yet received a key. At first they gave me a hard time, giving me strange looks and at one point they even said: 'There are no rooms available' - I said I already paid for one but didn't get the key yet. It took a while for them to realise there WAS a room (maybe it was the language problem) and they gave me a key.

The room itself was ok, not dirty or clean, a little bit shabby looking, but all in all it was ok. There was no noise from the street just the room next to mine.

The next morning I decided to check out the 'breakfast buffet', there were only a few tables and soon there were no seats left and people that were waiting for a table would stare everyone away. The reception lady was taking care of the breakfast on her own which explains the shortage of bread but not the inclusion of horrible stale bread. The selection of food was ok, different types of meat, some fruit, cereal, coffee, orange juice, milk and some vegetables. I was wondering why the yoghurts weren't cooled.

At check out the reception lady was surprisingly friendly.

All in all not the worst hotel ever. It really is ok if you don't pay too much and planning on staying for one night and if you need to be close to the main train station.

“Nightmare on Ellestrasser”

DO NOT STAY HERE. The hotel is without doubt the worse accommodation I have stayed in, in over 25 years of business travel. We were there during the EuroShop event so we paid a premium plus 600 pounds (not euros) for three people for two nights. There was no tea and coffee in the room but you could buy it from machine 2 euros for a small cup. The room, as advertised, did have a safe it wasn’t bolted down to anything but it was a safe. We stayed in an attic room overlooking a busy residential and industrial area well outside the city centre. The room did have a strange odour about it but that may have been the cleaner (ok fold down the duvet) he turned up at 18:30 to clean the room even though we had been out all day. We asked directions of the staff (who would have not been out of place in the thriller video) to the old town they sent us in the opposite direction. The nightlife in the area of the hotel was non-existent so at least it wasn’t too noisy.
On the plus side Düsseldorf is a lovely city and I would strongly recommend the old town, which has many bars and restaurants with every type of food catered for. The taxi and underground system are easy to use and priced clearly and reasonably. So Düsseldorf is a great place to visit and sight see. If you enjoy run down relics stay at the Berliner Hof otherwise steer clear of it.

“Do not stay in this hotel!”

Lausy hotel.

Aeroflot service.

Be aware of the trick this hotel playing. I booked hotel. On arrival they said my booking is not confirmed as they could not manage to work out what to do with a credit card. They said that they have rooms 40% expensive than in booking confirmation and small 3 bed room instead of regular 1 bed room.

Do not pay in advance. As soon as they get your money you will never get the service or money back.

The staff is unfriendly. Soviet era style service.

Better stay away!

“Weird place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2007

The Berliner Hof markets itself as a city centre hotel, don't believe it, the Altstadt (nightlife area) and Königsallee (shopping area) are a 15 minute taxi ride away, there's no direct tram or bus routes and the way into the centre isn't so obvious either, you're stuck in a rather gloomy and slightly gritty working class suburb of Düsseldorf.

Rooms were OK, the only problem being a total lack of heating, in spite of it being close to 0 degrees outside, but the rooms were clean and we didn't get charged for fictitious damage.

The staff were generally surly in the extreme, the Russian family running it could perhaps learn some very basic manners or at least how to smile. Communication was also difficult as their German was even worse than their English. Trying to explain to the front desk that I wanted to get the car out of the garage (manually operated doors, parking in a tiny shoebox, charge = 10 Euros a day, a little extortionate), you would have thought I was trying to teach them quantum mechanics !

The one good point was the breakfast, conveniently open until after 11am, quite unusual for such a small place.

Overall a last resort place to stay, next time I spend 5 Euros extra a night and opt for one of the Ibis branches instead.

“Hotel from Hell!!!!”

This hotel is run by a Russian family who were unfriendly from the start. The rooms were acceptable apart from blood stained sheets and a metal cot for one of the beds. However on checking out of the hotel we were advised we had broken furnture in one of the rooms to the cost of 200 euros. This was clearly not true but on discussing the issue the owner became aggressive and threatening. As we had a flight to catch we had to pay the cost..... Not the best end to our holiday!
