“Weird place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2007

The Berliner Hof markets itself as a city centre hotel, don't believe it, the Altstadt (nightlife area) and Königsallee (shopping area) are a 15 minute taxi ride away, there's no direct tram or bus routes and the way into the centre isn't so obvious either, you're stuck in a rather gloomy and slightly gritty working class suburb of Düsseldorf.

Rooms were OK, the only problem being a total lack of heating, in spite of it being close to 0 degrees outside, but the rooms were clean and we didn't get charged for fictitious damage.

The staff were generally surly in the extreme, the Russian family running it could perhaps learn some very basic manners or at least how to smile. Communication was also difficult as their German was even worse than their English. Trying to explain to the front desk that I wanted to get the car out of the garage (manually operated doors, parking in a tiny shoebox, charge = 10 Euros a day, a little extortionate), you would have thought I was trying to teach them quantum mechanics !

The one good point was the breakfast, conveniently open until after 11am, quite unusual for such a small place.

Overall a last resort place to stay, next time I spend 5 Euros extra a night and opt for one of the Ibis branches instead.

“Hotel from Hell!!!!”

This hotel is run by a Russian family who were unfriendly from the start. The rooms were acceptable apart from blood stained sheets and a metal cot for one of the beds. However on checking out of the hotel we were advised we had broken furnture in one of the rooms to the cost of 200 euros. This was clearly not true but on discussing the issue the owner became aggressive and threatening. As we had a flight to catch we had to pay the cost..... Not the best end to our holiday!

“DO NOT STAY HERE!! They will rip you off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2006

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I cannot stress this enough!!

Dusseldorf is a great city and we had a great time here, but this hotel is terrible, even though it was very cheap to book.

Firstly, alhough there are quite a few rooms, we were the only people there, apart from a German couple, which we found a little odd as Dusseldorf is full of tourists in December visiting the Christmas markets.
There were 7 of us staying in 3 rooms and there were blood stains on the sheets in 2 of the rooms, the shower was blocked in 1 of the rooms, 2 of the rooms faced a really busy road (was like sleeping by the side of the M1 in terms of noise in the morning) and one of the rooms was colder than the fridge- a can of coke left out in the room was colder than one left in the fridge! It was freezing!!

The main problem we had with this hotel was when we left. We checked out at about 11am and didn't need to be at the airport until 7pm, so we asked if we could leave our bags while we went shopping etc. They let us leave our bags in the corridor- normally I would have been worried about this, but as we were the only people there I figured we would be fairly safe doing that!
When we went back to pick the bags up they wouldn't let us have them as they said we'd broken 2 beds. They took us up to the rooms and showed us the beds we were supposed to have broken and they had removed most of the slats from one bed, a few from another and there was a broken slat on the floor- which was there when we got there. Basically, there were so many slats missing from one bed that it would have been impossible to sleep on, as you would've just fell through!! It was ridiculous!
The owner would not let us leave until we paid 100 Euros. We said we wouldn't and argued with her, but she kept saying she didn't speak English- although she had done so perfectly the day before. In the end we agreed to pay 100Euros as she wouldn't let us have our bags and we had a plane to catch. We were all really annoyed by this as we knew we hadn't done it, but knew we had no choice as we didn't have time to argue.
Once we paid she then said we needed to pay ANOTHER 100 Euros as it was 100 per bed. Again, we refused, but she said she would call the police and didn't let us leave. We were powerless as we didn't want to miss our plane, or be arrested in a foreign country, so we had to pay, even though we had done nothing wrong, and knew we were being ripped off.
When we left she refused to call us a taxi or let us use the phone, and when we stood by the roadside trying to flag one down she stood at the window laughing.

DO NOT STAY HERE- unless you want to be ripped off too. I cannot stress this enough!
I would definitely recommend going to Dusseldorf, but I would advise everyone to avoid this hotel and the criminal who runs it.

  • Disliked — The fact that we were ripped off and not allowed our bags until we paid 200Euros for damage we didn't do

“Not great for what you pay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2006

Just wanted to say I was disappointed with this hotel. Four of us have spent the last 10 days travelling Germany for thw World Cup & on the whole the hotels have been very good value. However, we paid more here than at any other hotel (all 3 star) and the Berliner Hof was disappointing.

The reception was understaffed (at one point the one guy had to deal with the fron doorbell, the phone ringing, us checking in & others checking out - all at the same time), we couldn't get any hot water from the bathroom, they couldn't provide us with a remote for the television (which had no buttons so we couldn't use it) and our room faced a busy road that operates 24-7.

However they were very helpful and stored bags etc without any problem, and the close location to the Hauptbahnhof is excellent.

The Berliner Hof is NOT a bad hotel. I just think that for the prices they charge you're better off looking for something elsewhere.
