“Excellent Value, Great Location, Would have given 5 stars, but carpet=YUCK”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2010

We paid about 70 Euro per night, so my entire review revolves around the sheer economy of the hotel. I would give five stars based on value alone, but see unkept carpet comments below....the main reason for four stars!

Location is fantastic for the average tourist....close to most major tourist sites and our room had a beautiful view of the Rhine and bustling 'restaurant strip'. Room was a good size, bed and linens were clean and comfy, but bathroom was rather small and some aspects were in need of updating.

In fact, the room itself felt about 75% updated, with the carpet in our room being THE WORST aspect of our entire experience with this accommodation. I apologize for not remembering our room #, but my husband said there were rooms in the hotel without carpet....I would highly recommend inquirying about one of those. The carpet in our room looked filthy...seriously made me not want to walk around the room without shoes on. With that said, I'm fairly positive the carpet was 'clean', it just had many years of stains that hadn't been completely removed and you could certainly note "paths" of wear and tear.

With that said, while the word 'luxury' fits no where in this review, I would not hesitate to stay here again! The hotel offers a bit more than 'basic' accommodation, is truly a great value, and the front desk staff was beyond charming. The hotel 'felt' family-ran, and I always like that (not supporting the mega-hotel chains, that is).

If looking for a place to rest your head "in the middle of the action" without paying a high price and willing to look beyond some imperfections, don't hesitate to book your stay here. I honestly cannot imagine finding a better bargain!

Oh, I should also mention (as some other posters mentioned) there are 'some' noise concerns, particulalry if you're not a city-dweller back home. The (fun to watch from your room restaurant strip) can be a bit noisy at night and proxmitiy to the train station results in (what I considered faint) noise from the rail.

“Great location and value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

I can only agree with other reviewers - great location and views, although it can be a little difficult to find the first time walking from the Dom / Hauptbahnhof. Room was a good size for the money - bathroom was small but clean and modern. Bed was very comfortable.

The views from the rooms facing the river are fantastic and worth the price alone, with big, fully opening double-glazed windows. I stayed on a Sunday night when the outdoor eating and drinking area outside the hotel was quiet, but you would have to be aware that this could be noisy on a Friday or Saturday night.

Reception staff were helpful and spoke good English. They allowed me to check in at 7am after arriving on an overnight train, which was a godsend.

“Location can't be beat -- great small hotel on the Rhine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2010

We booked a night in this hotel online as our last overnight stay in Europe while trying to get home to Ireland in the wake of the Icelandic volcano eruption. (Ryanair had been unreachable by phone for days, so we wound up flying home on Germanwings from Cologne/Bonn Airport.)

The hotel is about five minutes' walk from the main train station and the Dom, very close to the Rhine river, and not difficult to reach even with luggage. The hotel's website has concise directions on how to find it most quickly: follow them carefully, since the nearby area has some construction work going on and it's possible to get confused about which way to turn after leaving the Dom area. (When we got turned around, and called in for directions, the hotel receptionist actually came outside and started searching for us.) Google Maps users, please note: GM has misplaced the dot for this hotel by a couple of hundred meters / yards inland.

Everything in the hotel is quite compact, and a few touches (some doorways, furniture) date back a decade or so, or show a little wear, but most aspects of the hotel are new and in good shape. Our room's bathroom (shower only) was sparkling. The downstairs (pizza / Italian) restaurant has just been refurbished, and while we didn't eat there, to compete with neighboring establishments it must be good. Breakfast costs extra: we didn't bother with it, as we had an early departure. What was more to the point was that this area, right by a park on the Rhine, was littered with good bars and excellent restaurants. Noise from some of these places, particularly the downstairs bar in the hotel, could get to be a problem during the summertime when you might want the windows open (there is no air conditioning) so visitors less pressed than ourselves might want to inquire about quieter rooms at the front or side, The noise would probably not be a problem at all in weather chilly enough to keep people inside. Like many other small family-run hotels in Europe, this is one of those places where the hotel reception operates on limited hours: after reception closes down, you let yourself into the hotel via a side door with your room key. As in many of these narrow historical buildings, the elevator is tiny but shiny and new, and works just fine.

The rooms on the river side have a truly beautiful view of the Hohenzollern (rail) bridge and the Rhine: big windows, a wonderful vista -- the sun came flooding in first thing. Our room was a twin, which was fine by us for a single-night stay. Under the circumstances, we were delighted to have found anywhere to sleep at all, as Cologne was full of volcano refugees and the only other rooms seemed to be in hotels with much higher room rates. To find a clean and comfortable room with so many other positive aspects to the hotel, for such a low price, was terrific.

Recommended! We'd stay there again.

“great quality-price ratio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2009

The hotel has really spasious rooms (for Europe it's surprising!), but the bathroom is a bit tiny, although it doesn't bother in a short-stay. Room was very clean, bed was really comfortable, good choice of TV channels.
Staff was nice and helpful, and they kindly gave us 2 river-view rooms as I asked in my reservation.
Location is also very good, close to Dom, a bunch of restaurants and embankment.
Parking is situated opposite to the hotel doors, just 2 steps away.
