“Old style but lovely and atmospheric, in perfect location.”

Lowenbrau Altstadt Hotel in Koln is one of the most difficult reviews, I have ever write here... And this because is a small and old hotel, that in first sight seems that hasn't many to give. No elevator, access through their restaurant, old stairs, simple decoration. You initially think it's just "average", hoping that you will not have any bad surprise through your stay, to ruin your holiday...
But, as hours pass and you stay in, you will love it, every minute passes! Firts of all, all hotel staff is kind and polite, willing to help. The rooms are simple, but ok. It actually gives you the "IKEA decoration" impression, but evrything works fine and it's clear enough. We also found a 60'' LCD TV in our room! In the rooms, there are desks and chairs to relax (we actually took our coffes upstair next morning, and enjoyed the view).
A secret is, that the back rooms are not so nice as the front. Front rooms have a perfect view of the Rhine river and it's bridges! The is a green pavement in front and after that the promenade. The restaurant downstairs is open until 3.00 am and you can have a beer or very good german dishes. As our visit was winter, we didn't had any noise problem, as other reviewers mentioned (for summer).
The breakfast is served in the upper floor of the restaurant. Not too rich buffet (boiled egges, milk, butter, ham, slides of cheese and marmelade and cereals, with two kind of bred), but enough to fill you for the rest of your day.

Everything is in walking distance (markets, churches, Dom, HauptBahnHof, breweries etc). You will really enjoy the walk, even made in front of the river side, or in the back side, where the Old town spreads, with many bars, restaurants etc.

I totally recommend this hotel, if you want a pleasant, atmospheric sense. The prices offered are good enough, making it valuable. If you don't want luxury, but just a good place to sleep and explore the city, it's a great option. It's not the elegance that will earn you. It's the friendly style and the sense of the years that have passed over this place, making it friendly and warm.

Tip: Ask for room 7 or 17: They are bigger, front side, river view with bigger bathrooms than the 8 and 18 which have the mentioned tiny WC!

“like sleeping in an old tavern”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2009

The hotel is located above a tavern that appears to have been in this location for 500 years. Located on the second and third floors, the hotel rooms are large, and most come with attached bathrooms. The rooms are spacious, non-threatening, and homey. The bath is somewhat dark and the tub can be treacherous to exit, but everything works. The beds are quite low and made of slatted wood, so it feels as if you may actually break through to the floor. The beds were not too firm and not too soft, but tended to sway in the middle. No air conditioning, but our room overlooked the river and received nice cool air. Plus, we had a great view of a rockin' party barge that parked there until late in the night, discoing the night away until the drunken revelers stumbled off. The teenagers in my party were drawn to the party barge like flies, but the parents were generally unappreciative. The tavern offers food for guests, but we did not partake. This hotel is not disabled or wheelchair friendly.

“Great help from desk”

Brother and I stayed for one night and the guy (should have gotten his name) at the check-in was phenomenal. Took time to show us the routes on our map to some breweries, volunteered to put our laundry in the drier while we were out, made calls to help us find a good pool hall. He was great.

The room was basic, cool area of town, a bit noisy, good value for 74 Euro (double with an extremely small bathroom with shower)

“A German Must!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2008

I went to Cologne for a fair and found this hotel trough booking.com.. I payed for 3 nights € 145,00 total with b&b!! The location is perfect and the building very nice with a magnificent pub you have to pass trough in order to reach the reception..
I had the single room under the roof with river view.. very romantic (even if I was alone.. :=() a funny thing: the bathroom.. never seen one smaller than this.. but nice anyway..
If you have a lot of luggage (like I had) ask for a room in a low floor... I almost die to get up to my room with all those stairs..(no elevator..)

“not all it could have been”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2008

We stayed 2 nights in a river view room right next door to our good friends. The room was great, with a tiny in-room bathroom, nice big windows, comfy beds, and a small fan (thank God). The bar/restaurant downstairs served very good food, and the building and neighborhood are picturesque and interesting.

Now for the problems. It was really hot in Cologne while we were there, and unfortunately the Lowenbrau seems to be a heat magnet. The rooms only have thin, filmy curtains that DON'T block any sun, and the windows are heavy and screenless, which caused issues when opening them wide at night to let in a breath of cooler air. Also, the bar downstairs (including the terrace right below the windows) is open until 3 am, so the noise was significant. In the morning, after a restless and hot night, it would have been nice to go down into a cool breakfast room and see a smiling face, but no. The room was HOT (no curtains OR windows opened) and the breakfast attendant was abrupt, bossy, and unsmiling. Unlike the suppers we had there, the breakfast was mediocre. The staff generally seemed in a bad mood or something- there was a lot of tension there. Finally, the check out was not convenient or smooth, with a lot of hassle for no earthly reason.

Overall, my complaint about the Lowenbrau is that the people running it did nothing to make our stay pleasant. With some thought and attention, they could have made things much nicer. I wanted to love the Lowenbrau, but instead, it was a case of the place not meeting its potential.
