“Not a happy stay!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

We arrived at the hotel for a 3 night stay, first impressions were that it was a lovely old hotel. We got our key and then climbed the 4 flights of stairs to our room. When we reached the landing that our room was on we smelled the damp, when we opened our room door which was room 28 the damp smell was even stronger. The shower had at some point leaked through to the bedroom there was a large damp stain on the wall but it was the smell that was hard to bear. The heating did not work well only half the radiator in bathroom heated up though we did have a little fan heater that we left on constantly, there was no hot water for almost a day, the towels in the bathroom were threadbare, the pillows were as flat as pancakes I am sure this room was originally a single room as we could not move around it at the same time. There was a lovely view over the Rhine (plus point) but window was so small that only one of us could look out at the same time. The net curain fell of when window was opened in fact the window almost fell out at one point. We ate in the restaurant for the first night and the food was pleasant but nothing special. This hotel cost us almost 600euro for 3 nights, this was not cheap and the price was inflated due to an exhibition and the Kolne Messa. I would not stay here again and the only reason this hotel is getting a 2 rather than a 1 is due to the location and the view.

“Excellent Value for Money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

A very friendly hotel located about 10min on foot from the main rail station on the river front, centrally located for the Christmas markets and shops.
Room was small but clean and comfortable, the room i had was a single, the toilet was located across the landing but was private and access was gained using the room key
Breakfast was included and was self service continental style
For the price I paid I was extremely pleased and would return again
Didn't try the restaurant food so couldn't comment how ever it couldn't have been bad as the restaurant was full both lunch times and evenings it looked nice as i passed by

“Hellish noise and no breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Simple hotel not far from the Hauptbahnhof of Kôln and in the old town. I arrived here on November 10th, and unfortunately that was the start of the Carnaval of Köln. There was a terrible noise on the street until 3 o'clock. I had asked for a "quiet room" but it was clear that they do not read what customers write. And what is more, there was no breakfast on this day either.

“Cheap stay, back breaker!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

If you're staying at the Lowenbrau, for goodness' sake, arrive before 8 p.m.! After 8, they leave your key at the bar. You'll have to enter through the narrow aisles of a restaurant packed with diners (they serve until 3 a.m.) and bang your luggage into unsympathetic rumpsteak consumers. Round the curve to the bar and you'll get your key -- and receive the confounding news that the hotel has no lift. Back into the restaurant with your luggage you go -- looking up a sizable staircase to the restaurant's second level. You'll be forced to negotiate the steps along with waiters and waitresses juggling trays filled with, well, rumpsteaks. At the top of the steps, you'll inconvenience more diners as you try to unlock the door to the upstairs hotel rooms. We were in Room 28, which should have been a red flag -- fourth floor, and numerous more flights of steps. Once in the room, we collapsed on the conjoined twin beds, noticing that they took up most of the floor space in the tiny room. The bathroom was OK and the view of the Rhine was wonderful, but the furniture was old and mismatched. The restaurant food was good and they gave us a 10 percent off coupon, but we were dismayed at our early dinner the next evening to discover they were already sold out of apple strudel. We checked out early to catch a train to Paris and called the "reception desk," such as it is, on the second floor for help with our luggage. A really nice British waiter from the restaurant came up and hauled our luggage downstairs to the waiting cab. It was a bit rough around the edges to say the least, but it was an authentic German experience -- giving us more interesting stories to take home and with much more personality than an expensive American chain hotel.

Room Tip: Get the lowest room possible. Ask for a room facing the Rhine.

“Never again!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

I was in a single room on the 4th floor, my shed is bigger...
The room was very small, there was a washbasin in my room but despite being told that the bathroom and toilets were on the same floor, mine were on the floor below. True they were private to me but the toilet was almost in the shower as the room was so small.
The carpet in my room and going up the stairs on the fourht floor was dirty and in need of replacement.
WiFi is not free and did not work in my room.
The location of the hotel is convenient but that is about all that is good about the place.
I was in Cologne to visit a trade fair and only stayed one night, had I been staying longer, I would have moved hotel.
I would definitely stay in the same area but certainly not there.
