“Wonderful hotel with lots of charm. Wunderbar!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2011

I was pleased to have found a Cologne hotel located by the River Rhine, but on approaching the hotel I was a little perturbed by the major roads in the vicinity. However, traffic noise was not a problem inside the building - I have never known such effective double-glazing. I received a polite and helpful welcome from the receptionist, and the reception area was very pleasant, with a small lift up to the bedrooms.

My room was at the front with a view of the river. It was perhaps on the small side for a twin room but the high ceiling and vast wall-to-wall window added a spacious feel. It was supposedly a Mediterranean-style room but nothing in the room reminded me of the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, the room was very pleasing, being quite nicely furnished and decorated, although the walls were perhaps a bit bare and needed more pictures. A nice touch was a free bottle of Evian water. In one corner, there was a small old-style TV (with only one English-language channel) and a very nice clock-radio. The bed was reasonably comfortable but the duvet kept slipping off the bed during the night.

The small ensuite shower-room was very clean and equipped with a range of toiletries. The shower only had a curtain, which seemed to attack me once it was wet, otherwise the bathroom was in line with the rest of the room.

Breakfast was not included in the room-rate but was available for only 5 Euros extra. It was served in a lovely dining room just off the reception area. A very good range of food was on offer, including the cold meats that seem to be standard in Germany. The breakfast was of exceptional value.

Check-out time is normally 11:00 but can be extended to 12:00, which I chose to do. However, the cleaner pestered me repeatedly throughout the morning and I ended up leaving a little earlier than planned. What I found unforgiveable was that on returning from a short mid-morning walk, I found my bedroom door wide open with cleaning equipment inside the room but no cleaner to be seen. My room had been left unattended like this with nearly all my valuables inside!

Overall, I loved this hotel and found it to be excellent quality for the price. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning a stay in Cologne.

“a lovely hotel, clean comfortable and welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2011

we stayed for 2 nights and had a lovely stay. The rooms were spacious, clean comfortable and modern.
Our rooms had a great view over The Rhine and the double glazing meant there was no noise from the traffic outside.
The bed was comfy and I had the best 2 nights sleep that I have had for a long time!
My room had a radio as well as tv which I thought was a nice touch as I dont speak German so tv isnt that interesting, I could have music instead.
The bathroom again was spacious, clean and modern. A good powerful shower and fabulous deep bath! I even had a set of bathroom scales... perfect for weighing my case before flying home!
Breakfast was a buffet. Loads of choice of hot and cold dishes, juice and a huge pot of coffee. Very tasty and at only 5 euros extremely good value for money.
The staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. We used our very limited German vocabulary but all the staff spoke perfect English.
The hotel is in a great location too, overlooking The Rhine, only a 5 minute walk from the train station and a 5 minute walk from the city centre.
Overall I thought it was a lovely little hotel and would not hesitate to book again if I get the opportunity to return to Cologne (I hope so!).

Room Tip: ask for a room on the front for the view

“Had a lovely holiday. Hotel basic but fine.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2010

A group of us students went to Cologne back in 2007 and had a lovely time. The hotel was basic but staff were friendly and eager to see that you were ok, especially with topping up coffee in the morning! :) Breakfast had a good choice. We were on the front of the hotel and the light sleepers in the group felt that it was quite noisy, i personally didnt hear anything. If i was back in the area again i would happily stay there, reasonable prices and a comfortable stay.

“Nice for the Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2008

Very nice hotel in great location for seeing the Rhine or visit the shopping district. Great restaurant for authentic German food below restaurant and fantastic free breakfast buffet. Room was small and did not overlook Rhine like other rooms so make sure you request one. Hotel staff very friendly and willing to assist you on any requests. Convenient medium cost hotel for someone that wants to do sightseeing in Cologne

  • Liked — Location to sites, restaurant, breakfast buffet
  • Disliked — Small elevator, small TV

“Student hostel anyone?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2007

Well, the price can't be faulted but I would not have wanted to pay anymore. Reminiscent of budget student accommodation, it had a strong smell of stale cigarettes despite signs everywhere saying smoking is not allowed. Our double room consisted of two single beds pushed together, a tiny tv (not really a problem), an open wardrobe unit and a desk. The bathroom was tiny and the shower cubicle was poky and the sliding doors difficult to shut properly. The pillows were hopeless - squashy and so soft they may well as not have been used. Heating could no be controlled in the room. Breakfast was pretty good though with a large selection of hot food, breads, cheese, cold meat, cereal and yoghurt. I would look around for different accommodation before staying here again.
