“Great service - great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2010

This hotel is real pearl. It is located in the industrial area, close to the fair centre. If You are taking part into a fair this a perfect place. Fair centre is only a walking distance away. Service is great and decor modern but practical. Staff is willing to help with everything and the hotel even has a real finnish sauna. Breakfast is great and makes You easily go on until lunch.

Will defenetely stay again when taking part into a fair.

“Very unpleasant staff - no reservation possible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2008

We did not stay but I felt that I had to post my experience nonetheless: my husband tried to make a reservation for staying there on business with a colleague. When he phoned he was told that they would call him back. When - two hours later - nobody had called back, he asked me to take over as he was in a meeting.
So I phoned saying that it was for my husband who was still waiting for a return call. She did not acknowledge the fact, that nobody had returned his call, and did not apologise, either. She then continued saying that they had no rooms. Furthermore, she said "and there is the piece of paper with your husbands name and number - we did not get around to that yet..".
I had no other possibility than to say that this was sad to hear as they could have conveyed that somehow meaningful, short message to my husband earlier, since when he called it did not seem to be a problem of availability but being too busy to take the reservation at once.
Thus I cannot recommend that hotel - I have been in the hotel business for 12 years, and if it already starts in reservations with this "i don't care"-attitude it will most certainly be that way with the rest of the staff...
Which is sad, really, since business travellers always look forward to a chance of scenery from the average hotel.

“A real disapointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2007

The trick with this hotel is the website : very "trendy" and attractive. So a big disapointment, not only because of the poor location (just try to walk to the "nearby" park and you will understand what i mean...) but also of many details and of the behaviour of the staff. Our first welcome was rather friendly but we then received room 17 which is... above the kitchen. And the kitchen door is a revolving one which makes a terrible noise which we had to stand until 1:30 am and then again from 5:30 am on... so we did sleep less than 4 hours ! When we asked to change room, the answer from the manager was : "yes we have problems with this room but you know, i can sleep anywhere even when it is very noisy so...". I think it says it all. So he did not want to relocate us for our second night even if they had slightly "upgraded" rooms available. End of the story.
Beside this problem, I felt this hotel was is fact rather "cheap looking" and pretentious. I congratulate the photographer whose photos were used for the website.

“Good hotel for short breaks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2007

I stayed at this hotel for two nights and found it to be a very clean
and the staff very friendly, the location is not the best but the cost of the room and hospitality of the staff more than made up for this. For the sake of a €6 taxi fare you can save a great deal of cash compared to other hotels in the city, which may be in better locations. the only downside was not being able to get some food at night, except for sandwiches etc.
Any one wanting a clean room and bed for the night at a good price, this is the place, I would definately stay there again.

“Awful location - annoying details”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2007

I stayed at the New Yorker in Cologne in Jan-2007 on a business trip

Bad location -
The hotel is the middle of nowhere - marketed as "convenient for the Messestadt and the center" - for both you need to take a taxi.
The hotel is sorrounded by industrial/logistics plants - you feel like living at a warehouse - the first trucks start coming noisy at 6 in the morning.
Overpriced -
For this bad location the 200 EUR they charge is a theft. (OK - this was at the time of a large tradefair, but still ...)
For the hefty price, you get a hotel, which is "economical" to the extreme.
Annoying details -
- The heating is only on, when you are in the room - but in many rooms the heating was not functioning well, so the rooms were - freezing cold.
- The shower is fixed (so you hardly avoid washing your hair daily)
- the bathroom is like a shoebox
- The lift is at the "half floors"
- the long & curvy corridors are always dark and freezing

the only good news is the friendly staff, who tries to be helpful, but rather helpless bcs of the [--] up fittings
The breakfast is also quite OK.

I don't understand people who stay at the New Yorker when they are on holiday.
Next time we will take care to book early enough in the Dorint Sofitel - definitely worth the extra EUR 30-40
