“A very pleasant small hotel with easy parking but small room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

I stayed three nights at this hotel in January 2012 while on a business trip near to Cologne. My room was very small and very basic (with only a tny pull-out shelf on which to try and perch a computer) but as it is in a small cul de sac parking is very easy and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful and a good choice on days when the hotel was full but was significantly reduced on my third day when there appeared to be fewer. A really nice plus point is that it is within easy walking distance (400 metres or so) of one of Cologne's best seafood restaurants, El Scampino. Yes, I will stay again but will hope for a slightly larger room.

“Loved this place, especially the decor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

I loved our brief stay at The New Yorker. Travelled to Cologne for a night to attend a concert; selected this hotel because it was about a 15 minute walk from the venue, GEBÄUDE 9. Both were in a warehouse district but I felt safe the entire time.

The very contemporary decor of this hotel suits me perfectly. The ground floor lounge areas are very well designed and the art is quirky and fun - some substantial pieces. The receptionist doubled as bartender that evening, but we didn't wait at all and it was no problem. The garden areas look lovely but wrong season to enjoy them now.

There are previous reviews about the interior hallways - long, dark, with motion sensor lights that don't activate quickly enough for fast walkers. Still true.

Our suite was nice, the pictures may make it seem a little fresher than it is but still I really liked it. There were no sheers at the windows, just blackout curtains, so there was no in-between; it was either the room is lit by lamp and you have privacy, or the curtains are open but neighbors can see in. I'd like to see sheers added; I often work for hours in my hotel room and would want that ability to have daylight and privacy combined.

The bathroom was spacious and well laid out. There was no hand soap in the dispenser nor bar soap to use instead, so we used the shower gel. Custom blend/scent made for The New Yorker and I liked it, however the plastic bottles are so firm that it is impossible to squeeze product out. It's slow, leaves waste product, and can't be easy for anyone with arthritis. They should rethink the packaging when it's time to reorder.

Breakfast is not included but do add on to your reservation as I saw nowhere nearby that you would go out to breakfast and besides that, it was really great. Nice cheeses, meats, breads, and the hot items (eggs and meats) included great scrambled eggs (can't remember last time I got those off any buffet!). Attentive but unobtrusive service.

For a long while I have thought I'd like to have a small hotel with a contemporary and artsy flair; The New Yorker inspired me! If I ever have the chance, I'll stay here again just to do research and get ideas.

I definitely hope to return to The New Yorker!

Room Tip: Get a suite - not much more price wise and they provide a lot more space! If you're claustr...

“Amazing staff and beautiful decor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

I stayed in the New Yorker hotel in Cologne on business last week and would recommend it. It is by no means in the most convenient location but the staff alone would encourage anyone to come back and stay.

My room had two very comfortable single beds and was on the top floor of the hotel. It was spacious, clean, bright and stylishly decorated. On a work trip it is always nice to have the option to make yourself tea/coffee and to be able to iron clothes so the absence of both facilities was a slight disadvantage for me personally but not a major issue.

There is no restaurant in the hotel but if you fancy a bite to eat there is bar food available which is pretty tasty. The hotel has sensor lighting which, if you are a fast walker like I am, can be slightly disconcerting when the lights only come on when you are already halfway down a corridor!

On asking for recommendations for food and drink on my final night I was enthusiastically presented with a map which had some bars and restaurants marked on it. The recommendations were excellent and the level of help and friendliness I experienced on my visit more than made up for any shortcomings of the hotel.

A special thanks to Torsten!

“Great service - great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2010

This hotel is real pearl. It is located in the industrial area, close to the fair centre. If You are taking part into a fair this a perfect place. Fair centre is only a walking distance away. Service is great and decor modern but practical. Staff is willing to help with everything and the hotel even has a real finnish sauna. Breakfast is great and makes You easily go on until lunch.

Will defenetely stay again when taking part into a fair.

“Very unpleasant staff - no reservation possible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2008

We did not stay but I felt that I had to post my experience nonetheless: my husband tried to make a reservation for staying there on business with a colleague. When he phoned he was told that they would call him back. When - two hours later - nobody had called back, he asked me to take over as he was in a meeting.
So I phoned saying that it was for my husband who was still waiting for a return call. She did not acknowledge the fact, that nobody had returned his call, and did not apologise, either. She then continued saying that they had no rooms. Furthermore, she said "and there is the piece of paper with your husbands name and number - we did not get around to that yet..".
I had no other possibility than to say that this was sad to hear as they could have conveyed that somehow meaningful, short message to my husband earlier, since when he called it did not seem to be a problem of availability but being too busy to take the reservation at once.
Thus I cannot recommend that hotel - I have been in the hotel business for 12 years, and if it already starts in reservations with this "i don't care"-attitude it will most certainly be that way with the rest of the staff...
Which is sad, really, since business travellers always look forward to a chance of scenery from the average hotel.
