I loved our brief stay at The New Yorker. Travelled to Cologne for a night to attend a concert; selected this hotel because it was about a 15 minute walk from the venue, GEBÄUDE 9. Both were in a warehouse district but I felt safe the entire time.
The very contemporary decor of this hotel suits me perfectly. The ground floor lounge areas are very well designed and the art is quirky and fun - some substantial pieces. The receptionist doubled as bartender that evening, but we didn't wait at all and it was no problem. The garden areas look lovely but wrong season to enjoy them now.
There are previous reviews about the interior hallways - long, dark, with motion sensor lights that don't activate quickly enough for fast walkers. Still true.
Our suite was nice, the pictures may make it seem a little fresher than it is but still I really liked it. There were no sheers at the windows, just blackout curtains, so there was no in-between; it was either the room is lit by lamp and you have privacy, or the curtains are open but neighbors can see in. I'd like to see sheers added; I often work for hours in my hotel room and would want that ability to have daylight and privacy combined.
The bathroom was spacious and well laid out. There was no hand soap in the dispenser nor bar soap to use instead, so we used the shower gel. Custom blend/scent made for The New Yorker and I liked it, however the plastic bottles are so firm that it is impossible to squeeze product out. It's slow, leaves waste product, and can't be easy for anyone with arthritis. They should rethink the packaging when it's time to reorder.
Breakfast is not included but do add on to your reservation as I saw nowhere nearby that you would go out to breakfast and besides that, it was really great. Nice cheeses, meats, breads, and the hot items (eggs and meats) included great scrambled eggs (can't remember last time I got those off any buffet!). Attentive but unobtrusive service.
For a long while I have thought I'd like to have a small hotel with a contemporary and artsy flair; The New Yorker inspired me! If I ever have the chance, I'll stay here again just to do research and get ideas.
I definitely hope to return to The New Yorker!
