I have just returned from a stay at the Flandrischer Hof, it was approx 8 years since I was last there and it hasn't changed a bit! It was rather dated then so the bedrooms and bathrooms are really in need of an update now. However, the atmosphere here is very relaxed, the large twin room had 3 beds in it and two huge windows overlooking the busy main and noisy road. (This didn't bother us but others may not like this.) The rooms are cleaned daily and the beds are comfortable. There's a TV (one English BBC World News channel) but no tea/coffee making, fridge, safe or body lotion in the bathroom. Hairdryer is available from reception.
Although this doesn't sound too good, the hotel suits us. The breakfast is excellent, staff are more than helpful and they keep luggage after check-out. Also, the location is fab! The Randolf U-Bahn (underground) is outside the hotel with Freisplatz U-Bahn just a short walk. There is a small Christmas market opposite the hotel too and a short walk to the Neu Markt Christmas Market. The Dom Christmas Market and two further ones at the end of Neu Markt are also a short walk away. There are loads of eating places, pubs, shops all in close proximity. If you like Irish Bars there are two great ones, 'Shamrock' is under the hotel and is popular. The hotel has it's own night life with live music nightly til late. It is good and very busy on Fri/Sat nights but is expensive tho so be warned! A gin and tonic was 9 euro's and a glass of wine was 8 euro's.
We flew to Dusseldorf Airport, got the skytrain to the train station and a train to Cologne. The Flandrischer Hof is a short taxi (approx 7 euros). Allow 35 mins on train to Cologne. Train was 63 euros return for 2 people.
Hope this is helpful, I would definitely go back to the Flandrischer Hof despite the need of an update. If you are going to the Christmas Markets or just want to party in Koln, this is an ideal place to stay.
Room Tip: Room 503 had a large windows, one being a very big bay you could stand in.
