“Happy I stayed here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

I stayed at this hotel for one night in July of this year and liked it very much. It's in a great location and when I say that I don't mean it's on the same block as the cathedral or the train station but it's just a several minute walk to either. I found the immediate vicinity of the Dom and the train station a little sleazy for my taste and things improved with every block further away from that area so the Hotel Harmonie was just the right distance as it was not a long walk to the Dom and not be in a sleazy area. I'd read in a couple reviews of this hotel that said the single rooms were a little small (I was traveling alone) and I didn't see any of them so I can't judge but for a few more euros I booked a double room and it was great. I would not hesitate to stay there again. Word of caution if you are driving a car: the driving in Cologne, especially in this area, is terrible. Even the locals will tell you that. There are so many one way roads and roads closed for construction I nearly pulled my hair out trying to navigate just a small distance in this town. Otherwise I had a good stay.

“Great Location, Friendly Staff, Typical Room Size”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2011

My oldest daughter and I recently stayed here on a World Cup trip that stopped in Cologne. The hotel is location very close to the main train station, and the Cologne Cathedral - which seemed to be the epicenter of activity for the city. The hotel was next to a church, so the ringing bells were a wake up call every morning - as we had to keep the windows open due to the unseasonal heat during our visit. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The room size was typical for Europe. It was very clean and the bathroom shower was large. The breakfast was included in the room, and was adequate. The only downside to the hotel was the limited wireless internet access. It was not free (nor was it free at any of the German hotels we stayed at during our trip) and the wireless signal was useless in our corner room. We had to go the lobby for it to work (which was just another reason to get a kölsch from the bar!). I would stay here again.

“perfectly located”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2011

This small hotel is located within a five minute walk from the main train station in Cologne. The building is old and charming, and the interior of the hotel and the rooms have been fully modernized. It is the perfect place to stay if you are looking for a small, convenient, clean, modern, and safely located hotel in the downtown area. Outdoor parking is available (for a fee) in a small lot directly next to the hotel. Because the hotel is located on a narrow, one-way street, one doesn't hear much traffic. The rooms are not huge, but because the ceilings are so high, they feel airy and roomy. The bathroom is not huge either, but everything is brand new and all plumbing fixtures worked perfectly. And, important for all travelers, all was very clean. A breakfast buffet is offered in the hotel, and there is everything one needs to start the day (no hot food, except boiled eggs). I noticed that guests were from a variety of countries, so it seems that this hotel appeals to the international traveler. The reception personnel were helpful and courteous.

“Completely let down by rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2011

Hotel looked ok from outside & reception but opened door to room and thought I was in a basic hostel. The single room was the size of a cupboard, very grim with no facilities (eg hairdryer, safe etc). The bed seemed smaller than a single and was not even made up, just a bit of bedding dumped in a pile at the end. My colleague's room was the same and we nearly checked out there and then but decided as it was just 1 night we would put up with it. Glad we did not spend much time in these tiny claustrophobic rooms. Bathrooms also small & don't expect any toiletries. All of this for over €150 a night!!

Only reason hotel gets 2 stars is that staff on reception were pleasant & helpful, location of hotel was central & breakfast was ok. Unfortunately, all of this was overshadowed by the terrible rooms, DO NOT STAY HERE IN A SINGLE ROOM!!

“Good room comfort value but bad overall experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2010

For the room rate I paid, the room is good value. Relatively comfortable with decent toiletries.

Room amenity and service were poor. In the first room I was allocated, the safe wouldn't work. After talking to the reception, they said they could move me to another room. After 1 hour waiting, heard nothing. I chased the reception and finally got a different room. In this room the bathroom wasn't enclosed, and the shower door opens right next to the room entrance. If you walked out of shower naked, anyone walking into the room would see you in that form. Also in this second room some of the lights wouldn't work.

Room is old and tired. I was in a premium room as well so I expected better. Some of the cupboards were located such that it was impossible to open the cupboard doors. The keycard holder which you need to place your key in to have power in the room is so far away from the safe. SInce you need to use the key to open the safe , if you do so at night, there would be no power (no lights) in the room. It's very impractical.

Breakfast was decent. In room internet is decent.

Location - about 10 min walk to Hauptbanhof. Reasonable distance and easy to walk to provided you know where it is located and have a good map. Relatively safe at night. Close to the Dom. Plenty of food choices within 15min walk.

Overall, bad experience. I wouldn't recommend coming here.
