The Hotel Continental was in the heart of Bonn immediately across from the Bonn train station.

I stayed in the Continental for two nights. The rooms are in a good state and breakfast was good, too. However, the "central" location kept me from sleeping. Either (cargo) trains, busses, trucks, street cars or drunks kept me from a good sleep.

I can only discourage staying here if you have a light sleep.

Modern, rectangular business hotel conveniently but unpromisingly situated adjacent to the main railway and bus stations, and above the metro. We had a 3rd floor junior suite, which was large and comfortable, with an attractive pale garnetiferous granulite bathroom (although the shower needs redesigning: try not to flood the floor). Breakfast was good (and with a nice view from the 4th floor) and the service friendly, with the notable exception of an unpleasantly unsympathetic lady sometimes on the front desk (she needs to find a job outside the service industry). The only obvious drawback is in the title (which Father Ted aficionados will instantly recognise from the 5th episode of the second season "Song for Europe"). I was reminded of this song whilst lying in bed listening to mainline trains and feeling the metro beneath. If you are a light sleeper, maybe this place is not for you. On the other hand it is good to be able to walk everywhere. Recommended pubs are The Quiet Man (10 mins walk away at 47 Colmanstrasse – cross the rail tracks under the tunnel : look at their website for happy hour times) and Bierhaus Machold (Heerstrasse 52, 10 mins walk northwest of the town centre) which has its own beer and a good atmosphere in the non-smoking area (you can also eat pretty well here, or maybe try the two nearby Spanish restaurants). The town centre itself is less characterful, but three reasonably good watering holes are the Bonnsch Brauhaus (Sterntorbrucke 4: good beer, below average food, overhyped), Im Sudhaus (Friendenplatz 10), and café bar bistro Pendel (Vivatsgasse 2a – this place seems popular for eating, and serves food until late). The walk up the Rhine to the World Health Organisation skyscraper building is very pleasant on a sunny day. It is an easy return trip by train to see Cologne Cathedral, and, of course, for all you Beethoven fans, you can visit his birthplace on Bonngasse on the north side of Bonn city centre.

I travel to Bonn regularly on business and have stayed in a number of the hotels in and around the city. I was reluctant to stay in this hotel given it's location directly over the road from the Hauptbahnhof and the bus station. To be honest, the outside of the hotel leaves a bit to be desired, there are a lot of take away shops nearby and there's always the general riff raff who hang around stations outside the front door (as well as a strong smell of urine and beer) however once you're inside the hotel, the rooms are lovely and spacious, they have airconditioning and are ensuite. The only slight gripe which I had was that the windows in my room didn't close properly, so I was able to hear the drunken antics of the people downstairs most of the night, but other than that, everything was good. The breakfast on the 4th floor was also good, and there's a terrace where you can have your breakfast and overlook the city. Being at the train station means that it's convenient for all public transport and taxis, which is a huge plus.
