The Maritim- home to so many climate change conferences that it induces Stockholm Syndrome in regular visitors- check out our Facebook group... Great place for a 'back to the 80s' convention.
The good: Great buffet breakfast (wide choice of German breads, cold cuts, wurst, herrings, hot stuff, pastries, fruit...). Room service breakfast good. Excellent, if pricey, cocktails (some of the best Caipirinhas anywhere) and good beer. Same building as the conference halls, so you can nap between all-night meetings.
The bad: Large, but dark rooms (90 % have only one small window). Small swimming pool with surreal fresco of a woman in a dressing gown and a naked child. More nudity in the mixed sauna- not for the faint hearted. Lousy unchanging limited room service menu (except breakfast which is good). Inadequate staff number who seem surprised that the hotel fills up during conferences with guests who actually want to order food. The key cards (which also operate the lifts) never work for more than 48 hours.
The ugly: The curtains haven't changed in 2 decades (one colleague who stays in the same room each stay counts the increasing number of moth holes - like the night sky.) Some rooms are directly over the power lines of the tram track that runs under the hotel. Internet a whopping 15 Euros noon-noon. Mile-long corridors like something out of The Shining.
Survival tips:
- Insist on a 6th floor room with a balcony (20 EUR extra), or a part-suite with large windows, or stay somewhere else.
- Subscribe to t-mobile wifi (29 EUR for a month compared with the Maritim's wired 15 EUR per day) - may not be accessible without a balcony room- check your coverage where you intend to use it!
- Room service breakfast is good value if you specify what you want, and is served until 1300
- Get outdoors- run in the Park, walk along the Rhein, hire a bike (from the hauptbahnhof), take a train to Cologne
- Always eat out: there are good restaurants nearby including Tao (fusion- 5 mins walk), Jasmin (Chinese- 5 mins walk), Rohmuehle (15 mins by taxi- great terrace on the Rhein, and jazz), the fancy Italian in the Koenighof Hotel (15 mins by taxi), Bastei (30 mins walk along the Rhein or 10 mins by taxi), and many great places in Bad Godesberg.
- Avoid the sauna unless you're comfortable with mixed sex nudity.
- The Piano Bar - dodgy 80's music, but everyone who's anyone passes through.
