“In the heart of Aachen”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We needed a good and pleasant hotel for the week end in the centrum of Aachen and choiced Hotel Aquis Grana City. The location could not be better, stone's throw wrom the Rathouse and Cathedral and next to the famous book store Mayersche Buchhandlung, a heaven for all book lovers.
Our hotel room was a little shabby, the furniture little tired and the total impression was not clean, for ex. the curtains were dirty! The bed was good, maybe a little too hard. Our room was quite calm so if you will book a room here you have ask room which not wil be on the street side. There can be lot of noise on the street in the week-end night.
The breakfast was good and varied but the breakfast room was very crowded and noisy because of a big senior groop and therefore unpleasant. The staff in the reception could have been more polite, they hardly welcomed you.

Room Tip: Ask a quiet room as high as possible ant into the couryard.

“Great location, super quiet!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Good value for money. Is just in the city center, with the Aachen Dom almost in the front of the Hotel . With good restaurants and bars nearby. It makes possible to enjoy the city through walking. The employees are very nice and all speak english. Breakfast is five stars, lots of variety and good quality. Room was big enough. The only complication was to park the car cause the parking was 11euros a day...

“A very limited hotel not a 3*”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

I was booked into this hotel since the Novotel that the company normally books had no Vacancy at the inn.
The hotel is centrally located which is good.
The room in the hotel was two singles put together with a pack of haribo instead of mints on the pillow.
The room only has a shower and not a bath unless you book a suite.
This is probably the second hotel that does not have a coffee machine or similar device within the room (the only other hotel was a 5* who never had coffee in the room as they wanted to charge you extortionate amounts for freshly delivered amounts).
For a Brit I am probably arrogant in the fact that the only English channel the room had was CNN (American not British)
It was past 8 in the evening when I reached the hotel, so I went down to reception to be told that the hotel does not have a restaurant and only served breakfast in a very tastefully decorated dining area.
I stayed at the hotel for three nights and found that the cleaner was not really cleaning the room. The room had a bottle of water on the first night which was not replaced. The glass I used to drink the water was not replaced nor was it returned to the tray when the room was cleaned. The bed was made up by the same duvet and the towels in the bathroom were the only things replaced. My clothes were left where they were (it was like the cleaner cleaned around my things).

I can say the room was comfortable but other than that the hotel had no amenities that a business traveller who is tired after the journey welcomes.
Next trip to Aachen means a return to the Novotel.

“Good as practical hotel, not leisure facility”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

I stayed several nights, solo, on business with some leisure. Excellent location on edge of old city center near tourist features, restaurants, and stores. The center is compact and walkable with lots of people about after dark. Hotel on narrow street with minor vehicle traffic but lots of pedestrians, area seems safe. I had a rear room looking over a small yard, mostly quiet. I suspect front rooms would be noisier. No A/C so had to keep window open, room was too warm a couple of nights (and bed had only a thick duvet). Otherwise room was comfortable, and clean. Listed as a single room but it had twin beds put together (inseparably) - room would have been small for a couple but was fine for one person. No coffee maker (buy coffee at bar). Plenty of closet space, desk, safe, room WiFi at modest fee, flat-screen TV (only CNN in English). Bathroom small but adequate, clean, with nice shower.
Hotel facilities included 24-hour reception with helpful staff, good elevators, small bar with impersonal seating area, but no fitness room or real reception lounge, a bit sparse for a 4-star hotel. Good buffet breakfast with attentive staff, and I was never delayed there.
Overall, this is not for anyone who wants to use a hotel as a leisure facility, but it was fine for a utilitarian visit like mine and I would go back (except probably not in hot weather because of the lack of A/C).

“Good Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

The Aquis Grana is located close to all the major historic attraction of Aachen. The room are adequately furnish, but I was actually unable to distinguish this supposed four-star hotel from the other three-star hotel I stayed in during my trip to Germany. The breakfast was a large, Westphalian-style spread--good if you like that sort-of thing, not so good if you prefer something lighter. All the staff with whom I interacted were helpful, and spoke excellent English. The hotel has a small bar, that serves beer and other drinks, though I don't know why any one would chose to have a drink there when so many except pubs and cafes are just blocks away.

In short, the location is great for sight-seeing. Room and other aspects of the hotel were average.

One note side: I was visiting the RTWH Aachen, and while the main administrative building is nearby (which is why I chose this hotel), the main campus (where I needed to be) is some distance.

Room Tip: Rooms facing street are a bit noisy.
